Rotarians for Bees

In response to a worldwide decline in bee and pollinator populations that will affect food production on a massive scale, Rotarians and Rotaractors in Melbourne, Australia have mobilised to form Rotarians for Bees. This is now a project of the Australasian Regional Chapter of ESRAG. Bee populations are dwindling globally because of climate change, pesticide use in agriculture, loss of natural habitat, fewer flowering plants and diseases (such as the Varroa mite).

The Rick Bit

Well we about to face some further restrictions so I hope you are all getting used to masking up.

Last Sunday I attended our first Cluster Zoom meeting chaired by ADG Peter Rawlings.

Each president had to chance to discuss how their club was striving to meet the various challenges we are current facing. The highlight of the meeting was a presentation on the Centenary Cluster project by Ross Kilborn. This project has been mentioned earlier and it is one that we hopefully can get involved with. Greg Fitzgerald has volunteered to be our club's contact with this project.

The next meeting on the 23rd will follow our board meeting so we will have a Club meeting to enable your directors to report and for you all to have you say.

It is my hope as we get more experienced in conducting our meeting via Zoom that be can explore ways to make pour meetings more normal, for example involve you are in chairing meetings, presenting GIGS, and what else. I await your creative ideas

For those that have read the RDU June edition you would be aware that the Baton relay was launched in Canberra by the Governor General. This is another project I would like to see pursued. In case you missed it here is the artical.

Commencing with the purchase of a Baton to support Polio Plus

President Rick raised to a toast to all those carers  looking after us, the community; doctors, nurses, medical staff, ambulance staff, police and others

Harry gave the Rotary Invocation

Secretary Bob gave his report by describing recent correspondence:
  • A letter from Bays Health Care Group thanking our support.
  • Australian Rotary Health looking for more contributions; they are asked to do more especially for mental health.
Livia left for Brazil about 10 days ago.  We are presuming that she was able to travel back home.

Chris Brayne (local state member) was the guest speaker.

Chris indicated that he was wanting to assist those needing assistance in the lockdown.  He was open to questions from members.
Greg felt that the government is doing a great job.  Greg commented that the lack of tourism has affected the number of jobs in the peninsula, where we now have 5 cases.  Greg asked about the need for a quarry when there is limited bushland on the peninsula.
Roger asked about the fire risk on Arthurs Seat.
Greg asked about a youth drop in centre.
David question the possibility of a McDonalds in Dromana and that it was out of place with the neighbourhood.
The club thanked Chris for his attendance and his willingness to answer questions.

Harry wanted to inform that a school project in Bhutan has a SkyHydrant project that has substantially reduced the number of children feeling ill.

Andrew asked about Roteract and whether we have a locally based Roteract?  Do we have a feeder organisation to supply members?  Rotary Interact clubs could be a possibility.  Chris indicated that interact clubs do work, but you need somebody in the school to commit to the interact club.

Ann Buchanan.

Ann and David have two daughters, Vair and Bec who are parents of Angus who is a Scout and Bea who is Cub. Helen and David who are parents of Andrew and Jenny who both like basketball and are Scouts.

Ann makes beautiful quilts, face cloths and likes knitting mostly small things like socks beanies face washers and dish cloths .
