Rotarians for Bees

In response to a worldwide decline in bee and pollinator populations that will affect food production on a massive scale, Rotarians and Rotaractors in Melbourne, Australia have mobilised to form Rotarians for Bees. This is now a project of the Australasian Regional Chapter of ESRAG. Bee populations are dwindling globally because of climate change, pesticide use in agriculture, loss of natural habitat, fewer flowering plants and diseases (such as the Varroa mite).

The happenings at the last meeting

The Sargent called the meeting to order.
Apologies were received from Ray, Elaine, Tony, Peter.

Secretary Bob reported that DG Mark Humphries wants to meet with clubs.  The first meeting with Dromana will be by zoom.
There is a car rally on the 8th November when volunteers are required.  There are more District webinars available.

Treasurer Mark indicated that $1000 was going to be transferred to Dromana Secondary College for four $250 scholarships for disadvantaged students. District support is sought. Dromana College to nominate the students.
Members to look for their  annual dues invoice. The treasurer would be grateful for prompt payments

Terry raised questions about exchange students.  Adrian said that there were a number of Rotary programs that are suffering.  Chris said that student exchanges have probably run its course.

Greg collected a bucket for the lift the lid program. He said we should leave buckets around shops for people to put their change in. Robert Alexander said he could provide more buckets if required.
Hillview project: There needs to be a fence to restrict bike riders from riding close to the picnic area.  The next project to build a jump park.

Rick asked to consider how to do lotto and fines in future .

The Halloween event was raised by Mark.  Greg has sent a notice of intention.

Andrew questioned whether we are able to paint the fence at the Dromana Community House.  It seems that it is undecided.  One argument is that we should assist these groups who are assisting the community’s welfare  The other argument is that this is not an essential service, then it should not be held during the Covid lockdown.

Rick gave an excellent “man behind the badge” presentation.  He told us of his early childhood and travel to Australia; has marriage to Carol; his early days with the PMG and with the Webster Computer Corporation and his art gallery.   Who knew he wished to fly around without an engine?  How brave was Carol!

And finally here is a zoom image of the members at the last meeting.

OUT OF TIME

Leaning against the golden undertow,
Backwards, I saw the birds begin to climb
With bodies hailstone -clear, and shadows flow,
Fixed in a sweet meniscus, out of Time,
Out of the torrent, like the fainter land
Lensed in a bubble's ghostly camera,
The lighted beach, the sharp and china sand,
Glitters and waters and peninsula-
The moment's world, it was, and I was part.

Kenneth Slessor.

Find some poetry to help us dream, Carol

From Wanda  Fitzgerald
My beginnings started in post war Germany, in a Displaced Persons Camp, Heilbronn, guarded by the Americans. My parents; father Polish, mother Ukraine, both farmers who were in forced labour.
In early 1951 we arrived in Australia. My childhood (with my sister) home was in Maffra, Gippsland till I was 17yrs. when I left for a career in General Nursing in Traralgon followed by Midwifery at Sacred Hospital, Moreland.
Travel overseas soon followed; Great Britain, Europe, Canada and India. I nursed in Scotland and Canada, being away 2yrs 8 months. More nursing in Gippsland and Melbourne.
After I met Greg we decided to backpack overseas. We married in Greece.  Our 7month trip covered some of Middle East and Asia. A highlight was walking to Annapurna Base Camp, 13,500Ft.
On return to Australia we made home in Dromana after Greg readily got a job at Lysaghts Steel Mill now Blue Scope, in Hastings.
As a family, we have 2 sons, 1 daughters and 6 grandsons. From Wanda

I have nominated Agnus for the next  ‘FORD” About Me’!
