Happenings at last week’s Meeting
Back at the Sailing Club, Sergeant Pete called the Meeting to order and handed over to President Charles.
We had the formal Toast and Invocation and then Charles handed over to tonight’s Chair, Chris.
Chris read out the apologies and then called on Wayne for a Special Event.
Wayne conducted a brief trivia quiz on Federation, which everyone enthusiastically answered (rightly or wrongly. Ed) and then distributed a questionnaire. This questionnaire was designed to gather basic information about our fellow members, to be used in enhancing our understanding of each other. (So he said, or it was a very lo-tech version of an identity theft scam. Ed) After getting us to answer ten questions, Wayne thanked us and collected the results. (We wait with bated breath to see what transpires. Ed)
Chris now called for the Presidents Report.
Charles took the opportunity to refer to his Changeover Night speech on Murray and once again welcomed him back. He then continued:
- The three new Board Members will need the support of the Members as they find their feet;
- The Trash and Treasure Merket is still under negotiation and effectively on hold;
- The Club has received three new marques courtesy of the Bendigo Bank; and
- The tiny house project is progressing.
Next was the Secretary’s Report.
Wayne announced that, in the new year, he will be attempting to streamline some of our processes. Hence, he will send out communications on Club Meetings, but responses must go to Merv as he will corresponding with the appropriate caterers. The new Committees (see below) will be meeting for the first time at Two Buoys and each Director will be in charge of the structure of the Committees agenda.
The Treasurer’s Report was short. The invoices for this year’s subscriptions ($225) will be coming out in the next week.
The Chair now called for Directors Reports.
Michael that the Mana Youth Project has been receiving mentoring on how to set up as a non-profit organization.
Chris announced that his previous experience in setting up heated environments for Orangutans and Elephants has now led to him being contacted by Tooronga Zoo to see if he’d be interested in taking on heating for Rhinos and Water Buffalos. Stay tuned for further developments.
The Chair now called for the Lotto Draw, which was won by Adrian, and the Fines session. Fines were handed out willy nilly for such things as:
- Charles for being President;
- Tony for not being Treasurer;
- Peter, Mark and Andrew for getting awards;
- Miscellaneous people for miscellaneous reasons; and
- All the Peters because there are too many.
Harry spoke regarding Moyra Kelly and the building of the Kilmore Centre by Rotary. This is an example of how Rotary helps.
Ross gave a brief talk on mushrooms and showed us the Book of Fungi. He pointed out that local fungi are not as toxic as imported ones.
Mark gave an update on Mike Smith. He is very ill with a bowel tumour and is undergoing treatment to shrink it. However, he is upbeat and looking to the future.
The Chair now handed the Meeting back to Charles who reminded everyone of the importance of the Committee Meeting. He then closed the Meeting at 8:05.

ROTARY CLUB OF DROMANA
SANDY CHRISTIE’S ROTARY INVOLVEMENT
Not long after Sandy joined the Rotary Club of Rosebud a committee was formed to create another club at Dromana. In 1972 Sandy became a charter member of this club and so began his constant service to Dromana. Sandy has served in nearly all positions and on all committees during his time at the club.
He was President for the Rotary year 1979-80 and has served long terms as Treasurer, Art Show Chairman, Rotary Foundation Chairman and Paul Harris Fellow selection committee.
When Rotarian Vic Dart came up with the idea for an Information Centre for tourists Sandy used his skills and energy to work with a committee to bring about the facility we have today.
Sandy was the driving force behind many successful Art Shows and instrumental in upgrading the display boards that are still used today.
Another passion of Sandy’s was the refurbishment of the Old Shire Office building in Dromana creating a facility for broad community use. Some of the current users were recruited by Sandy when the project was begun. He became Chairman of the first Committee of Management setup to administer the building and Community Hall. Recently he has spent many hours and much energy lobbying for a new hall and meeting room building for Dromana.
Along with other Rotarians, Sandy was involved in forming the Dromana Historical Society becoming the inaugural President some what reluctantly. He continued as President up to a recent illness forced him to step down. He was responsible for the Society moving into the rooms in the Old Shire Office building where they have significant displays.
Sandy has always tried to improve Dromana’s image and landscape so we can attract more people into the area. Through his Rotary service he has worked hard to upgrade amenities especially along the foreshore with picnic shelters and BBQ facilities.
Within the club the Rotary Foundation has an important role and Sandy has chaired this committee for many years constantly promoting its benefits and programs, encouraging the Club to make donations to the fund.
Fundraising through sales of Christmas cakes and puddings has been an annual event with Sandy in charge for many years.
Because of his service to Rotary and the community Sandy was made a Paul Harris Fellow (the highest award in Rotary) and later awarded a Sapphire Pin for his continued outstanding efforts.
Sandy is a highly respected, long-serving member of the Rotary Club of Dromana and has worked tirelessly and unselfishly for his community."
