Hi Everyone, This week l have been very busy with directors getting ready for the Election day BBq , Halloween supplies for the new BBq Trailer, dealing with Zen Trailers as well as speaking to the Dromana Primary School for their BBq on the 24th of Nov, going over signage with Chris Booth as well as Tony Viney for our first community Market on the same day.
We need all available members and there partners to assist with either the Market or the Election day BBq were possible, otherwise we might be short staffed.
Also speaking with Hill View to organize their wonderful donation for the BBq Trailer and setting up a photo opportunity.
Tony and Chris went to Mornington Mazda to finalize the raffle tickets for our first car Raffle, all prizes are ready, just waiting to go to print and then we can start selling them.
My wife Mary is organizing the Polio film night, it will not be the same film as advertised for Polio as there time frame is were we are very busy, and feel our members need a bit of a break from Rotary duties.
Mary is also organizing our Christmas break up, when we have more details it will be put to the board and members.
Director Harry asked me to contact Rosebud/Rye Pres Brian Allan to get the Skyhydrant and take it to our first Market in November, this is now organized for Harry and Tony.

Guest Speaker
David Splinter runs the Asylum Seeker Centre in Dandenong. Following 32 years working for Telstra he retired and starting looking for constructive volunteer work and through his Church association started with the Centre. The Centre operates an Opportunity Shop and also a food distribution network for registered families. The food is provided by Church associations in conjunction with supermarkets. To use the services of the Centre each family is interviewed and registered.
David explained the difference between a refugee and an asylum seeker. A refugee primarily enters Australia through an application via an offshore refugee camp and on arrival receives Federal assistance, can obtain employment with permanent resident classification. An asylum seeker enters the country illegally (?) and is allowed in Australia via offshore detention camps but has no permanent status and is not allowed to work. As a consequence they can be returned to the camps or be offered limited residency in rural locations up to 5 years or metropolitan locations for 3 years. As a result even though they may have resided in Australia for some years they could be returned to the offshore camps for assessment. David gave us a number of examples of families whose children have been educated in Australia are still liable for return to the camps.
It was a very interesting and on occasions confusing presentation - not because of David but trying to understand the system.

Chris.

One of recient guest speakers was Dave, he was doing a walk to raise awareness for dystonia, he completed the walk and dropped in to show me his medal.
