Happenings at last weeks’ meeting
This weeks meeting was not at the Sailing Club and only a smallish group of Club Members were able to attend. Due to your Ed not being an attendee it was up to the Clubs Roving Reporter, John Barnes, to record the evening ably assisted by our Staff Photographer Lyn Lewis.
Without further ado I’ll defer to John’s words, Lyn’s pictures and supplementary information from the Disaster Aid Australia (DAA).
“We met at the DAA shop-front and were welcomed by Cherie, Brian and Peter. Eleven Dromana Rotarians had made the trip: Harry, Bob, Anne, Ross, Lyn, Murray, Charles, Rick, Geoff, Greg and myself.
There are eleven countries donating aid and 24 countries receiving that aid world-wide.
The Greater Dandenong Rotary Club and the Endeavour Hills Rotary Club began this show and have now amalgamated.
All the SkyHydrants are made by a company called SkyJuice. Cherie works there two days a week while all other work is done by volunteers. Their building consists of a shop-front and five other rooms, plus toilets and a very good kitchen. There is a long hall leading down stairs to a larger room used for storage and seating for meals. Outside there is a small work area.
DAA has found that the greatest need overseas is for people wanting help to rebuild their homes after disasters and, secondly, access to clean water.
Providing clean water has been a great success. 80% of illness in schools has been caused by unclean water. Having clean water has improved school attendance, helped to cut down on poverty and reduced plastic bottle waste. Unfortunately, children can still get infected at home.
Local people are being trained overseas to clean and maintain the SkyHydrants. They need cleaning once a day, which only takes a minute or so, a slightly bigger clean once a week and a bigger, more thorough, clean longer term.
In Ukraine the locals have hidden their SkyHydrants in the bush, for future use, when their villages have been overrun.
The night was a great success. We were educated and well fed.
