- He has made an application to the council for a grant for our Halloween celebration;
- There has been no response to questions regarding whether the construction of the picnic table can begin. Greg will bring this up again at the next Bay Trail meeting; and
- The Saturday planting of trees at the Hillview Reserve is going to be wet but this is good for the trees. The money for the trees has come mostly from the Habitat Restoration Fund.
Chris had the Chair this week and called on Secretary Michael for his report.
Secretary Michael read out the apologies then reported on:
- The Zone 8 Conference is in Canberra on 28th October;
- Rotary Foundation has allocated $434.4m to various causes, including $15m to Ukraine; and
- The club is required to discuss and vote on the Regionalisation proposal.
Chris announced that Harry had called to apologise for not being able to attend but also to announce that his son Gary is about to begin his treatment journey. The meeting wish him well.
Now we conducted Lotto, won by Ailsa, and levelled Fines. Those in attendance this week who were not here for the group photo last week, received a fine. (a Creative move on the part of the Sergeant)
Next, it was time for the TMG which this week was presented by Tyrrell who wanted to introduce us to the reality which is Peninsular Health.
Tyrrell and Maggie had spent a week interstate in Brisbane and Sydney. In this week Tyrrell had managed to fracture his knee, courtesy of a collapsing bed, and catch Covid. On his return to Melbourne he was sent to Frankston Hospital for the Covid and then transferred to Rosebud Hospital for the fractured knee (presumably Frankston don’t do knees, or they were too stretched with Covid. Also he was told that Private was not and option because he was not “ambulatory”). Once in Rosebud (which Tyrrell gave the impression he would not wish on his worst enemy) he was “subjected” to a series of ward “buddies” including: Dorothy the talker; Fred the deaf; Barry in traction; Phil the old (92) and not happy and Shane the homeless and staring into space.
Eventually Tyrrell was confronted with the option of walking or going into Aged Care. He had managed to procure daily physio’ by this time so set to the task. After two weeks he managed to pass the walking test and was homeward bound. Tyrrell can look back on the whole affair and give it a humorous twist but finished with the admonition to stick with Private Health.
Chris thanked Tyrrell and then called on Greg.
One of the highlights of tonight’s meeting was the induction of Ann Buchanan into the Club. Lyn, as her sponsor, escorted Ann to the lectern where Greg conducted the induction. A joyous welcome was extended by all members.
Chris now called on Directors for their reports.
Lyn announced that she would be meeting with the Secondary College, to discuss the Year 10 Model UN Assembly, in the first week back after school holidays. She also mentioned that Greg will be giving a talk on the Powerful Owl at the Primary School on 15th October.
Next, Mick gave an update on Agnes’ health (getting better!) and then announced some upcoming guest speakers covering Interplast Teams, Stem Cell Research and the History of Dromana. All subject to look forward to.
Greg also announced that he may have secured a guest speaker, talking about the McRae Homestead, on the 26th October. (our cup runneth over)
Chris now gave a Market update:
- Applications have been received for 9 new stalls meaning that we may have between 45 and 52 stalls in the future;
- Changes to the layout include:
- Moving the BBQ;
- The new Fruit and Veg’ supplier will deliver and the Community House may be involved in the presentation and distribution;
- The Fruit and Veg’ will be sold as a Rotary statement; and
- The Rotary Info’ booth will be positioned next to the BBQ.
- The stallholders newsletter is launched with stallholders being asked for bio’s and any comments;
- New stallholders will be invoiced in advance so we can be more sure of expected income. Current stallholders will be gradually, and diplomatically, move to this payment timing;
- Many thanks to Charles and Rob for all their work for the Market; and
- More volunteers are always needed.
Know Greg suggested that we donate some wine as thanks to last week’s photographers. The meeting agreed.
Merv now spoke about the 50th Anniversary preparation. As part of these efforts we will have a 8ft by 12ft (that’s 2.4 mtrs by 3.6 mtrs) sign mounted on the Salvo’s wall from October through to February.
Greg now reminded the meeting about the facts surrounding the Regionalisation Project proposal that had been presented at the last meeting. The general tenor of the discussion that followed was that it seemed to be both unnecessarily complicated while at the same time also being opaque and ill-defined. As a result the meeting authorised Greg to vote so as not to support the proposal.
The last point raised was the provision of a Xmas Lunch to the Hillview Quarry. This has been discussed and approved at the Board and was accepted by the meeting.
Greg thanked our Guests and all attendees. The meeting finished at 8:10.
