President's Message

I would like to thank all those who attended Ray's funeral and thank Chris Booth for his eloquent words. It was a sad day but a fitting send off.

We have had a cold, Covid-ravaged start to the year with numbers down and people flying north.

Thanks to Merv attending the Hillview Working Bee we were able to install a seat in the best viewing spot on the reserve. Seigi Edwards continued weeding with good effect.

The next Working Bee is Saturday the 20th of August. I hope to do some planting and prepare the bonfire for Halloween. So put it in your diary and come along.

This next meeting we need to prepare for the Christmas in July market. Please support Chris and his team.

We will be holding a board meeting after the general meeting, so I would like as many board members as possible to attend.

Happenings at last weeks’ meeting

As Greg has mentioned, the meeting was a little light on for attendees. Colds, Covid and some temporary relocations to warmer climes meant that Greg was left to multi-task the running of the meeting.

Sergeant Greg called the meeting to order and called upon President Greg to propose the toast and open the meeting. President Greg then handed over to Chairman Greg who then called on Secretary Michael (thank goodness).

Michael ran through a number of announcements:
  • Rotary District Invoices have arrived;
  • Gayle Tre, who is the co-ordinator at Dromana Secondary College, has been in contact regarding securing funds to rebuild a school in Fiji;
  • A Tribute to Ray has been published in the newspapers;
  • Tonight’s apologies were read out;
  • The State Government has called for applications for grants. This will be put to the Board for discussion.
Greg spoke up about a number of projects which may merit being put forward to access some of the money available in the State Government grants. Hillview projects such as the Walking Track, the Carpark and the Playground may be prospects. Also, the Walking Track under the Eagle Chairlift may be suitable.

Greg now called on the available Directors.

Mark Long is the Club Protection Officer and pointed out that some members Working With Children cards were about to expire. Renewal of the cards before they expire is relatively easy. All that is needed is to go to the following web site: https//service.vic.gov.au/find-services/work-and-volunteering/working-with-children-check/renew-your-working-with-children-check and follow the prompts. (Just copy {ctrl C move the curser ctrl V} that line of text into your browser, at the top, and hit enter) However, if you let the card expire you have to go back to the beginning and start as if you were a new applicant which is, as we all know, laborious. Mark suggested that we might get future speakers from the agency. These renewals were also very important for our future insurance costs.

Greg then “volunteered” Michael to conduct the Lotto, which was won by Murray. Minimal fines were handed out but your Ed managed to get caught for making another mistake in the Bulletin. (serves me right).

Director Mike announced:
  • That flyers for the “Xmas In July” Market have been printed, as have signs for display in store windows;
  • The figures from our various social media presentations show that we are gaining an ever increasing following for the Market.

Director Joseph announced that the Beer and Wine tasting evening has a suitable number of attendees, which he thanked, and he expects a few more. Volunteers to assist in the “mechanics” of the night are still appreciated.

Director Chris spoke about the need to establish a form of “Market Team” which would be available to be drawn upon in the future. This spreading of the Market expertise would mean that the workload was not left to the same group each month. The provision of community stalls was progressing with community groups being canvassed such as: The Community Garden; The Habitat Restoration Fund; The Southern Peninsular Community Support and Information Centre; The Dromana Community House; the CFA; and the Dromana Man’s Shed. Due to the increase in the costs of supplies the meeting agreed that the Market should raise it’s prices to $3 for sausages and $6 for egg and bacon rolls.

Next, Bob and Charles announced that they were the current club representatives on the Peninsular Australia Day Committee. The meeting agreed that it was important for the Club to be involved in the celebrations.

Greg finished the night by talking about the logistics around the Halloween Night. Samantha Blair from the Community Garden is looking for “labour” during the evening.

A very busy meeting finished at 8:00.

Renaming of the GIG.

As part of the sweeping changes that our new President is going to inflict/impose/meet out to the Club, (I jest), he has discussed with your Ed the idea of renaming the GIG segment of the meeting. This is by way of refreshing the segment and also giving it a more meaningful title.

So this Bulletin is really the last one with a GIG (I hope). I’m suggesting it is now “My Mind in Three Minute” (MM3M), isn’t that so 21st Century? Any other suggestions should be raised and will be submitted to the members for voting. Please make your thought known. If a decision is made and you didn’t speak up then no complaints will be entertained.
