President's Message
member photo
Dear Rotary Members and all friends from Rotary. If you are having a birthday or anniversary have a great day.

This is my last report as your President.

Thank you all for the good work and achievements this year. This does not happen by the man at the top, it's always a club effort.

In spite of Covid we have been able to give a lot of people, including children, clean water for many years to come. No more water-born disease and now a better future.

We have been able to support the local Community as well, thanks to you all. A great achievement.

I hereby wish you all the best for the coming Rotary year, under the leadership of Greg.

For whatever position you hold in Rotary, just remember it's for the betterment of the world.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your President and to make it a better world.

Just think of me as gone but not forgotten. I am always there to help you.

Take care, your Past President Harry.

All growth depends upon activity,
There is no development physically or intellectually without effort,
and effort means work.

BE PRESENT IN ALL YOU DO.

Happenings at last weeks’ meeting

As the end of this Rotary Year rolls around we had Pete Anderson in the chair for our last meeting with Harry as our President.

Harry started the meeting by thanking Tyrell for agreeing to be on his team for next year. He hopes that they will be able to continue the Stove Project and, possibly, turn it in to something which may attract the interest of the Cluster. He has also found out that information on the deployment and use of SkyHydrants will be provided to all sponsors. In addition, plaques will be placed next to the SkyHydrants announcing who was the sponsor. He felt this was particularly fitting for the Byatts, for their donation.

Pete, after questioning the veracity of the run-sheet called on Secretary Chris for his report.

At this point in the proceedings the meeting was witness to a truly sad sight as Secretary Chris, tears in his eyes, was led to the podium to present his last report of the year. His voice breaking with emotion…………….sorry, I got carried away. Actually Chris ran gleefully to the podium and delivered his final report with a big smile on his face.

Chris read out the apologies for this week and then:
  • announced that there were 44 people attending next week;
  • the joint Board Meeting last week approved, or asked for the meeting to approve;
    • $4000 for Interplast seed money;
    • $750 for Sri Lanka Aid with a further $750 next month;
    • $3000 for the Dromana Community House;
    • $5000 for the Southern Peninsular Community Support and Information Centre;
    • The creation of a club-specific life membership for Ray and Elaine Barnard-Brown, which will involve a change to our by-laws;
  • we have received information from Food Plants International reporting that food insecurity has doubled worldwide and is leading to global insecurity;
  • Market stall holders were at 12 but, after a 2-for-1 offer has led to us now having 25 stalls. Next month is our Xmas In July Market with carols, roasted chestnuts etc which will be widely touted on social media and advertised wherever we can.
Pete called on Greg for a Hillview Update.

The tree planting was a great success with thanks to Lyn, Bernard, Murray and Bob from the Club.

It was Lyn’s turn to give us a 3 minute GIG on “Why I Joined Rotary”.

On very short notice, and being a natural raconteur, Lyn gave us a very entertaining talk about how she had moved into a new house on the Peninsular and the Barnard-Browns used to stop by for a chat. However, one day Ray hit Lyn’s dog (a staffy I might add) in his car and it was dog at the Vet and Ray at the Doc. The B-B’s invited Lyn to a Rotary meeting, and feeling that she wanted to have a useful retirement, she accepted. At her first Rotary meeting she was surprised to find a group of parents of children that she had taught.

Lyn has enjoyed the ordinary things in Rotary. She isn’t rich but gains great satisfaction in contributing to the local community. The only things she finds disappointing, about Rotary, is the lack of women. (here, here).

Pete called for Lotto, which this week was won by Rick, and the Fines. These are the last weeks of Merv and he freely admitted that he was “clutching at straws”. However, he was ably assisted by the meeting who enthusiastically handed out fines “willy nilly” and with little regard for the consequences. (Thanks to Merv for all your effort this year. Even your misguided fines directed to Ed.)

Next, it was the Directors Reports:
  • Joseph reminded everyone about the beer and wine night on Monday 18th July. The night needs some volunteers and there were also some flyers for distribution.
  • Chris announced that, from the 6th July, all Club meetings will be on a Wednesday night, no longer Thursdays.
In summary Harry thanked all the Club members for their support and looked to the future of our successes with the SkyHydrants and our support of Interplast.

Many thanks from the Club to Harry (and his nose).

The meeting finished at 8:00.
