Our meeting this week was disrupted from the planned committee-centric one. It was not Covid this time but the Flu and most of our Directors were hit by it. This week’s Chair, Bob Donaldson, tried to make sense of what we had left and started by welcoming our special Guest, Debra Reidel, from Sri Lanka. Then he called upon Secretary Michael.
Michael referred everyone to the available information on next years Conference and the need for billets for out-of-town attendees. He then read out the extensive list of apologies, mostly due to the Flu.
The Lotto was drawn, won by Ross, and fines were handed out by Acting-Sergeant Merv. The fine session was brief and was followed by President Greg asking for volunteers to fix the corroded bolts on the David Buchanan Shelter and reminding the meeting of the importance of people notify Secretary Michael of their attendance at our meetings and whether they require a meal.
Next, Director Lyn spoke about her meeting with the Primary School Principal and the fact that the school has already been involved in a tree planting exercise but would be interested in the chance to have a Ranger speak to them on the Powerful Owl. That and other opportunities for engaging the student are being investigated. There is a potential for a wall at the school to be used for a mural by an available artist, at the cost of $2000, to feature Dromana history and the Powerful Owl. The meeting supported this idea and Lyn will present it at the next Board meeting. The Principal was supportive of the idea of using the electronic signs at the School to advertise our Market.
The Chair now introduced Debra Reidel who is our contact in Sri Lanka for the distribution of aid packages funded by the Club.
Debra spoke about the dire situation unfolding in Sri Lanka, with prices having quadrupled and there being no petrol available for up to four weeks even after the Government introduced a rationing system. She is only able to provide families with children very basic packs and has provided 32 families with milk powder with the help of a local charity. She spoke of going to help a Muslim fishing village where they have no petrol or kerosene to run their boats so they have no food or income. She thanked the Club for all it’s efforts to help and feels that the emergency is far from over and Sri Lankan families will need help for many years. In finishing, Debra handed over her official report.
President Greg thanked Debra for taking the time to come and give us some insight into the work that she does and what lies ahead.
Chris now gave us an update on preparations for the Market. The banners and boards managed to get erected even though Chris and Bob had never done it before. Luckily Tony arrived to save the day (and enliven his fledgling case of the flu). There are 35 – 37 stalls this month and 10 -12 have signed on for the next 6 months. Good news is that 5 -6 stalls will return in September after being away for years.
Chris attended a meeting on our social media and there is to be further updates on all fronts, including being mentioned in the Primary School Newsletter. Our Instagram and Facebook presence is spreading and 1000 flyers were distributed. Our trailer, with it’s new sign, is arriving soon. Chris is looking at providing an interim solution to the lack of fruit and veg’ at this Market.
Greg thanked our Guest and all attendees. The meeting finished at 8:05.
