Rotary Exchange Student 2014-2015 – District 7090 to 9820
Dear Rotary clubs of Dromana and Rosebud-Rye,
Hello, everyone down under! I hope everyone, and everything is well. It’s been a long time since I’ve been gone – and I think I’d just pop in to see how everyone is and give a few life updates.
To the potentially new rotary members, hi, my name is Lyz and I was a Rotary exchange student during the years of 2014 – 2015. I’m originally from a small town called Lockport, New York, USA; right outside of Niagara Falls. I lived all over the Mornington Peninsula during my exchange. I went to Dromana Secondary School and had four host families – one being the Donaldson’s’! My two exchange counsellors were Sue Cashen of Dromana and Elizabeth Wilson of Rosebud-Rye (Best counsellor’s ever). They were my extra set of moms throughout the exchange, which my mom will always be grateful for.
I often reflect on my exchange and all the great memories I hold. I attribute such a great exchange to such great Rotary clubs. I always knew I was cared for and looked after the entire year I was away from home. If I did not have you as hosting Rotary clubs I would’ve missed out on so much! I will be forever truly grateful for the experiences, memories, and gifts that the Rotary clubs of Dromana and Rosebud have supplied me with for the rest of my life. Some of my favourite memories are practicing my cycling skills with Neil Stitt for the Rotary Ride to Conference, going on an amazing trip to Tasmania with Cole and Barb Byatt, and getting to see half the country with the rest of the exchange students for 3 weeks. I will hold those memories close to my heart forever.
As for my life post exchange, it’s been pretty busy. I graduated Lockport High School in May of 2016, moved across the country and started college at the University of Arizona in August of 2016, and I’ve been here since. I study geology with a focus in hydrology and seismology. I also minor in Latin. I’ve got a couple more years to go and then I will be graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Geoscience and Latin in 2020. I’m very very excited to see what the future holds. The town that I currently reside in does not have a Roteract club, but I won’t let that discourage me. Rotary is everywhere… I’m bound to find one somewhere.
So that’s how my life is going so far! Big things are happening. I would’ve never gotten here if it wasn’t for the help of Rotary International. I would love to catch up with everyone some time soon. In fact, I will be back on the Mornington Peninsula December 14th through the 27th this year for the first time since I’ve left back in 2015. I think it would be great to stop by and say hello to everyone. Let me know what everyone thinks 😊.
Hope to hear back soon! Best wishes,
Lyz Holz

Although most of the public knows our name, our latest research tells us that too many prospective members or supporters do not fully understand Rotary. They don’t know what we stand for and what we do in local communities. And nearly 60 percent of those surveyed said they were unaware that a Rotary club exists in their own community.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK, PRES PETER

GOOD EVENING ROTARIANS AND FRIENDS

Chairman for the night was Harry.
Invocation was done by Harry.
Pres Peter was very happy with his first board meeting, the new structure worked perfectly, it started at 5.15 and was finished at 6.20, thanks to all the board for the work they have done and are doing this year, we are well on the way to having a great Rotary year, Just remember this year l want it to be a very social year, if you have any ideas about getting members together for some reason, please let Peter no and he can pass it onto his social secretary (his wife Mary), then we can organize something.
Director Tony spoke about the market, and how there was 6 objections and about the car raffle, we will be getting a Mazda 2 organized by Peter and Chris, there will be around 25,000 tickets maybe more and selling them for $3.00 each and running till Easter. It was also decided that Peter can organize our new BBq trailer, he will have it designed bye himself and others and he will get it all funded from local donations and Bunnings.
Director Harry spoke about membership month and asked all members to help looking for new members, Harry also spoke about winter Rotary jumpers and said if anyone wanted anything to contact him.
Member Greg spoke about the tree planting day and said there will be a free BBq for all those who help in the project, its only 2 hours, all the holes are dug, so it makes it easier, great Rotary project to get our name out there.
Don’t forget August is MEMBERSHIP MONTH..

GUEST SPEAKER
Dr Andrew McLean works for Equitation scientist International.
Andrew spoke mainly about the Elephants over in Thailand and India, and how he changed the way they train Elephants to respond and understand to commands, he uses no punishment methods, just rewarding methods, using a clicker and food treats he can get the Elephants to do just about anything he want in a very short time. He is very passionate about his job, because he see’s what can be done in a much more humane way, there are no cages or boxes in his techniques, no sticks or spears, he said using this old way, there was more human deaths caused by the Elephants.
He also spoke about using the Elephants for transport of the rangers to catch poachers, he said the poachers couldn’t hear the Elephants compared to 4 wheel drive cars, as well as they don’t need roads, they make there own path’s through the bushes, he said they have killed more poacher’s this way and started to stop the decline of the Elephant population. Andrew showed a film clip of the training he does to teach the other people how to do things, also the cages they used to use, also how they trek through the jungle with rifles looking for the poachers, it was a very talk, was good to see and hear how things can change for the better. Great positive story.
PIC. 1/ Harry and Dr Andrew McLean. PIC. 2/ Geoff and Elaine Taylor and PIC .3/ is Col and Barb Byatt in Greece.
