Happenings at last weeks’ meeting
This week the Hybrid part of the meeting was working with Rob having dialled in. Greg welcomed our Guest Speakers Sue Fisher, Janine Callanan and Fiona Dinner who are to talk about the Thursday Girls. He also welcomed Trudy Ziegerink as well as Paul Nitas from Hillview Quarries.

Next, Greg spoke about the number of donations the Board had authorised:
  • The $15,000 to Rotary Australia World Community Services (I’m getting a good understanding of why we just say RAWCS. Ed.);
  • $250 to Matilda Milewska towards her fund raising on the Alpine Walk;
  • $500 to Dromana Sea Scouts; and
  • $4,000 to the Connect to Australia Project, which is providing computers to the disabled.

Greg also announced that Ann Buchanan had agreed act as the Club Alumni Contact to maintain contact with ex-members or members who are unavailable. (to be honest, he used a title which I missed. Ed.)

Harry was the Chair this week and called on Mark for the Secretary’s report.

Mark announced:
  • The busy Board meeting minutes are on the Club Web site;
  • There are updates to the Constitution which will have to be voted on by the Members. He will send out advance information and notice of when this will happen;
  • The Chelsea Rotary Club are having a Book Fair and Rob will be collecting any books the Members want to donate;
  • The Rotary Donations In Kind (DIK) will be having an open day on 18th March at the West Footscray Warehouse; and
  • Unfortunately, Roger McMillan has officially resigned from the Club.
Tony, who was standing in for Charles, (no height-est jokes here. Ed.) had a few announcements to make:
  • Regarding the Dromana Estate Car Parking. This is a relationship that it would be advantages for the Club to cultivate as the Estate has a long term contract for functions such as the Egg Hunt which are very lucrative. 6,000 tickets have already been sold. Consequently, it is very important that we get the volunteers for this event instead of having to get “sub-volunteers” from other organisations; and
  • We have had about 10-11 people sign up for the Friends Of Rotary group. The mechanics of how the group will work are still to be worked out, but it is an opportunity to bring people closer to Rotary.
Bernard now endorsed the need for Egg Hunt volunteers and asked that a number of preferences be indicated on the returned forms. He then enumerated the Club Cash and Bank Account Balances up to the 1st March which came to $42,445.95. However, since then we have already paid out $16,312.20.

Murray now took on the role of temporary-Sergeant and began the Fines session with the old standby of “missing badges”, which brought in some donations, followed by targeting of Greg for his haircut (not sure if this was a criticism Greg or the hairdresser?). Not having the finely honed killer instinct of our usual Sergeant/s, Murray was gentle on the Members and closed the session.

Chris announced that Tyrrell was in hospital after having a heart attack (he’s having a stent, not a stump, inserted. In joke. Ed.) The meeting wishes him well and looks forward to his return, even in the capacity of a Friend Of Rotary.

Harry let the meeting know that he, and Trudy, expect a report on his son’s progress and regime in the next week. He also let it be known that Greg is going in for a series of operations and expressed the support from all in the Club. Greg has done a great job for the Club with ideas such as the Cluster Group for Interplast and the Turkey/Suria donations.

Now it was Lotto time and Bob was the winner this week.

It being International Women’s Day, Harry now introduced our Guest Speakers Sue, Janine and Fiona to talk about Thursday Girls which are Advanced Breast Cancer Therapy and Support Groups.

These Groups are set up to support women with metastasised breast cancer, which means that it is at stage four and not curable. Free, professionally-led weekly therapeutic group meetings on Zoom as well as face-to-face for women with metastatic breast cancer in Victoria.

The Groups aim is to support the women in “living well” so that they have contact with other “travellers” and the support for living with the uncertainty of what they are going through. This opportunity to talk with other women in the same circumstances is a great help.

The idea of the Groups grew out of a 1997 Monash University study and they are the only Groups of this type in Victoria. Their spread across the state is still limited and it was proposed that the Board discuss how the Club may be able to assist in helping the Thursday Girls to penetrate further, especially into the Mornington Peninsular.

After answering many questions from the Members, Harry thanked the ladies for taking the time to come and talk to us.

On this note, Greg thanked all of our Guests for coming along, thanked all attendees and the meeting finished around 8:20.
