Happenings at last weeks’ meeting

This week we were joined at the meeting by District Governor Bill Degnan and his wife Judy.

After the toasts Bill gave a quick rundown on the District Conference pointing to the wealth of ideas that have come out of the Conference and are already being implemented by various clubs. He also touched on Rotary International and how some Zones are increasing, especially on the sub-continent, while unfortunately ours is decreasing.

After Lotto was won by Judy (which was in no way an attempt to ingratiate our club with the DG) the meeting was handed over to Chris who briefly spoke about the beginning of the support we are providing to the Floods relief and the imminent Zones amalgamation. Major
Projects Grant Applications are open and must be received before 18th March.

Rick spoke about the success of the QR code being displayed on the spinners with a donation of $100 already being received.

Mike spoke on our social media efforts with the Flood Relief being featured from this week. The Flyers for the next Market are being prepared. He also presented a glowing letter from the Program Coordinator at Southern Peninsular Community Support thanking us for the donation from last year’s Twilight Market and remarking on how thankful they are to have community organisations like Rotary Club of Dromana support.

Merv then handed out his most successful set of fines by referring to the fact that Club rules state that shirt and tie is the dress code when the DG visits.

DG Bill now gave his more formal presentation:
  • The Zone amalgamation is now underway. Normally the proposal would be presented in November but lockdowns/etc delayed the commencement of the process. Our Zone memberships have been dropping by an average of 45 over the last five years and this makes the current structure unmaintainable.
  • Recent interactions with various Governments has pointed out the difficulty of matching our Zones to Government structures. Consequently, a proposal for restructuring our Zones along Regional lines has been put forward. It will be trialled by two Zones.
Bill now opened the meeting to questions from the floor:
  • Why don’t we have a democratic election of our DGs? This is not precluded by the regulations but has not been done yet. Bill will look into the being changed.
  • How are District Emergency Funds being distributed? $10,000 has been allocated to Flood Relief and $5,000 to the Ukraine Refugee situation. Donations can be via RAWCS or Club to Club.
  • Can we receive a list of the Relief works that our Zone contributes to so that we can market the values and successes of Rotary to the local Community? Bill undertook to provide (drown us in) information.
Bill received an enthusiastic thanks for his attending and speech.

Tony announced that the new trailer is about to be registered and new signage has been quoted at $3,200. It is expected that it will be in use at the next Market.
Tony will be sending our an e-mail asking for volunteers to help cleanup the church shed (see below).

A very interesting meeting closed at 8:10, just as the sun was setting over the Bay.

Tony’s E-mail.

“Dear Colleagues,  Geoff Taylor and I will be installing the wooden floor to the club storage trailer between 8:00am and 10:30am this Thursday 17 March.
It will be an opportune time to follow up with a clean out of the shed and dispose of what is not needed.

Volunteers Required
Assistance from at least 3 volunteers to clean out between 10:30am and 12:30pm on Thursday will be greatly appreciated.
 Regards,
Tony “
