Happenings at last week’s Meeting

Our first Committees Meeting of the new year was held at Two Buoys and was a very successful start to the new Committees.

Wayne set the scene for the meeting by pointing out that a club of our size could not justify a full complement of Board members, so the committees had been amalgamated based on synergies of responsibilities. This all made sense (although my reporting may not. Ed) and the committee members were seated together at separate tables.

After the meal the discussions ensued.

Here are reports from two of the four new committees:

International Service/Foundation

Our International Committee has suggested we conduct a hamper raffle at every Rotary market day. Groceries are the main items to be included along with wine and possibly home gardening products. These items could be bought or, as Charles suggested, possibly donated by the big 4 supermarkets. All avenues of supply will be investigated. Our aim is to raise$1000 for a donation to Sky Juice Foundation who do great work with the Sky Hydrant in 3rd world communities in Asia, The Pacific, Latin America and beyond giving clean safe water.

Public Image/Promotion/Publicity

Meeting notes

1.How would we like to proceed with meetings as Pauline will be away from 12/8-14/11?

2.What are our objectives for this committee?

To work closely with the other committees to enhance and publicise their work
To function as front of mind and integral to what we do for all club members e.g. projects/events
To make our local community aware of our function and our commitment to the people of Dromana
To assist the membership committee in growing the club membership
To review and adjust website as appropriate
To broaden the market that to which we appeal

3. Marketing needs to be aligned to practice and events: Ideas on keeping abreast of this

Monthly report backs after each committee meeting and minutes to be circulated (Committee Directors to follow up)

4. Which committee does the planning for each event and who is responsible - can we have those sub-committees listed on the committee documents under the main committees

We need feedback from each of the committees on which committee is overseeing which event and who will be the contact person (Committee Directors to follow up)

5. Discuss current state of marketing and any ideas of how to enhance

Connection with local paper (Marion to investigate contacts)
Website (whole committee discussion)
Fliers at market (Pauline to design in Canva and Marion to follow up)
Business cards with website (Andrew to follow up with Chris)

6. Other items and ongoing discussion items

Enhance image - increase membership
Do we do more local events to enhance image?
Involve more with schools eg Market - invite singing groups
Make a calendar and plot out PR/publicity actions
Change Rotary sign in Dromana to have an indigenous connection

To do - Create a plan on Wayne’s calendar for the marketing of these events (Pauline to action)

Other events that we could investigate to broaden market appeal (All committee members to discuss and investigate options)

Wayne made additional points about the purpose of the Committees:

Directors are to delegate, unlike in the past when they did it all;
Individuals are encouraged to get involved;
There will be various crossovers of skills and knowledge among members of each Committee; and
Lets take little steps and do them well.

After a successful Meeting (if the level of discussion is any indication. Ed) the Meeting was closed at 8:15.

David Jarman.

Another find from Merv on who the award is named after.

“Rotarian David Jarman

The Club’s last Charter Member passed away in March 2019 after a short illness. David joined Rotary in his early thirties (1972) and served as President in 1984/85. He enjoyed the fellowship of Rotary and got involved in all projects especially ‘hands on’ events. Along with wife Joy, David attended many District Conferences and developed plenty of life-long friendships. He volunteered for FAIM trips to New Guinea, Fuji and the Solomon Islands on several occasions and proved to be a great team member. David was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for his service to Rotary and the greater community serving on local councils for many years.

David was Mayor of Flinders Shire and then inaugural Mayor of Mornington Peninsula Shire after amalgamation in 1994. He was also involved in many groups outside Rotary including Orchardist Association, Chicken Meat Growers Assoc., Bus Proprietors Assoc., Red Hill Tennis Club, Red Hill Agricultural Society, Flinders and Dromana Historical Societies, Victorian Farmers Federation Mornington Peninsula branch, St Johns Church at Flinders to name a few. David also served as President at Flinders Golf Club for five years.

In 2013 David was awarded the ‘Order of Australia Medal’ for his long service to the community.

A major part of David’s life was his family, wife Joy and daughters Sarah and Nerida. An extended part included Nerida’s husband Andrew and their children Hugh and Ruby.

David will be sadly missed in the community and by his many Rotary friends.”
