President's Message

Harry and Trudy are taking a well earned break this week, so no Presidents Message this week. (Ed.)
Last weeks’ meeting

This week we had a Social Night at the Pig & Whistle in Main Ridge. I’m sure everyone who attended had a great time. I was unable to attend so this weeks’ Bulleting will contain bits of information that have been published this week via e-mail plus some extras.

The Disaster in Tonga.

I’ll just copy what has come from District plus the letter from Tyrell.

“ The effects of the Volcano and Tsunami on January 15th will be far-reaching, impacting the Tonga Community for months, possibly years to come.

Communication remains problematic with international and inter-island call still no possible due to the damage to the undersea cable.

Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) will be working with Rotary New Zealand World Community Service (RNZWCS) and Rotary Club of Nuku’alofa (Tonga) in providing aid and assistance to the affected communities’ and restoring their livelihoods.

RAWCS has registered a Rotary Australia Relief Fund project to seek financial assistance from Rotary Clubs, the public and private sector.

Donations to the RAWCS Relief Fund are tax deductible.
Donate through https://rawcs.org.au/

Tyrell added:

“NOTICE TO MEMBERS OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF DROMANA INC – TONGAN DISASTER

Members, President Harry has asked me to send you the attached information from District regarding the recent disaster in Tonga.  As you will be aware the island nation has been severely damaged by the recent submarine volcanic eruption and tsunami.  Whilst there have been multiple factors impacted upon the immediate damage to fresh water and buildings has been of concern. Rotary International in general and Rotary International Australia in particular, are attempting to address the issue with regards to assisting with international aid.

We have received a note from our Assistant Governor, Peter Rawlings advising that any donations to this project have been registered with RAWCS and is tax deductible. One of our members, Adrian Davis has pledged $1,000 to the fund through our Club because of his close association with Tonga and Tongan Rotary.  President Harry has recommended the Rotary Club of Dromana also allocate a $1,000 towards the fund. I have attempted to attach an email received from PDG Merv Williams, RAWCS National Manager, Projects and Volunteers. For those who have not encountered RAWCS before it is the Rotary Australia World Community Service.

Should any member wish to contribute to the fund they do so through the Club as it may be possible to obtain a grant to match funds raised by the Club.

Yours through Rotary,

Tyrrell McGeever,
Director, International Services.”

Let’s hope we can continue to help.

On a Lighter Note.

Rick sent out the latest on the Hub spinner:

“A bit of a struggle but I managed to lift the bucket with $480.65 out of the Dromana Hub Spinner today, and I fed its contents into the coin counting machine at the Rosebud Branch of the Bendigo bank. This time my actions did not result in almost destroying the machine; all went smoothly apart rejecting a few foreign coins.
So far this Rotary year the Hub Spinner has contributed $1993.55 to the project account
Regards
Rick”

Another reminder from Greg:

“The Habitat Restoration Fund is holding an open day on Saturday the 12th of Feb at the corner of Shands Rd and Shoreham Rd Red Hill.
We require four people to help with traffic and road crossing. 9.30am till about 2pm we will donate $500 to  The Rotary Club of Dromana.
If you are able to help, give me a call.
Thanks Greg

For those Members wanting to find out more about how the various directorates work within Rotary here are some instructions I received from Chris on the Community portfolio:

“Go to Rotary International web site → My Rotary and then register. When on the site go to Learning & Reference → By Topic and then scroll down to Community projects and click on.”

Thanks Chris.

And Lastly.

The use of TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) doesn’t seem to be reducing at our club meetings even though some people find them confusing. Rotary has long TLAs (with more than three letters) so I’ve dragged up an old list that I was given some time back. This may be of assistance to new members and us older ones who can’t remember.

I hope all this helps and look forward to seeing you all at the Golf Club this Thursday for Pizza.
