Happenings at last weeks’ meeting
This weeks meeting was chaired by Chris which meant he had to bring his multiple roles together and exhaust himself by chairing and responding all at the same time.

As Secretary, Chris announced that we had had enquiry from the Red Hill RSL regarding our Clubs involvement in the Anzac Day celebrations this year. Of course Covid had interfered with the last few years so Chris will pass the enquiry on the Mike when he returns from Fiji.

Rick announced that the QR code system had raised $700 so far towards the Flood Relief.

Tony reported that the floor of the trailer has been completed but the registration has had to be postponed temporarily. Market planning is well underway and at this point we have 29 stalls confirmed with an expectation of 30+ by Market Day 26th Match. After discussions the Council is improving the Market area with better security and the trimming of trees etc. The topic of a shelter, funded by the Club, was discussed and an application for approval will be submitted to the Shire soon.

Next, the meeting was presented with a 3 minute GIG by Adrian Davis on the topic of U.S. Friendship Exchanges. He had been involved in an exchange with 13 Rotary members from Minnesota who had had an exciting and interesting time touring southern Victoria. These exchanges have been paused, most recently because of the pandemic, but Adrian feels that with the Club and District support they can be revived and the Rotary Clubs in the U.S. will respond positively, especially considering that some U.S. Districts are coming to the World Conference in Australia. From the Clubs point of view we would get the chance to offer to billet the visitors and provide drivers for their sightseeing. Adrian is willing to lead this endeavour, with costs to be shared. The Club Board, and eventually the District Governor, are to be approached for approval and support. Geoff Taylor voiced his support for this endeavour and characterised it as a “once in a lifetime experience”.

After Lotto (won by Rod) and Fines the meeting was presented with one of our own as this weeks Speaker.

Bernard Dobson took the opportunity of Easter coming up to speak to us on the subject of slavery in the supply chain of chocolate, especially children in slavery. He showed us a brief film on the reality of child slaves in the harvesting and preparation of cocoa and pointed out that we, as individuals and households, can do something to help eradicate this horror. Simply be buying our Easter chocolates from certified Child Slave Labour Free manufacturers we can make a contribution to making the use of slaves not economical. Further information on this subject is available at www.acrath.org.au.

Here are some of the certifications, not “self certified”, that manufacturers will display:

The meeting thanked Bernard for his informative speech.

Merv next spoke about meeting up with Drew King from the Dromana Secondary College and how Drew mentioned that the College may be wanting to work with our Club again on some Fund Raising initiatives. The meeting felt that this would be a welcome return to a previously productive partnership. In relationship to this previous relationship it was mentioned that Teresa Stelling was about to retire and it would be appropriate if the Club could arrange for an award to be presented to her recognising her support and work with the Club.

Another very interesting and informative meeting closed at 8:00.

Even though we all get these emails I think some of them deserve repartition.

An Extract from Chris’ E-mail.

“I would also appreciate help to load the new trailer from the shed on Friday afternoon. Two or three of us should be able to do it and then hopefully we can spend another hour looking at what we can throw out.
 Many thanks,
 Chris  “

Hi Rick,
I actually saw the sign on the coin spinner outside Ritchies and thought that Rotary would be a good place to make a donation to the floods.
Cheers
