President's Message
member photo
Hi members, the 100 yr and 50 yr banner is going well. Merv is doing a great job. Should be ready soon.

Please support Charles and Polio plus by attending the December first film night. Rope in as many as you can.

I will be away this week, so Michael Smith will be standing in.

Do as I say not as I do, and support Chris at our market this Saturday.

PS. Wanda said we have plenty of sweets for the AGM. Could we have some salads please.
Happenings at last weeks’ meeting

Director Lyn was the Chair for this week’s meeting and she unleashed a meeting the likes of which we haven’t seen for a long time in terms of it’s verbosity. Consequently these notes will be very bulletined. (and that’s not a dad joke.)

Secretary Mark was first up:
  • Reminders for the RAWCS zoom meeting on the 21st November, the Club AGM on the 30th November, and the By-Laws vote on the 7th December, if everyone is happy with the proposed changes;
  • The Club had received correspondence from the Dromana Australia Day Committee, which was of an administrative nature;
  • The Club Board minutes have been published on our Web site;
  • Meeting nights devoted to education on Rotary, for newer members, are being planned; and
  • The resignation of another member, Rod Troutbeck, has highlighted a problem for the Club and a meeting night will be devoted, largely, to seeking options.

Next to the lectern was Director Charles to talk about the Club involvement in the Australia Day celebrations:
  • Volunteers will be required from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm on the day (Thursday);
  • There will be a marquee set up for Rotary;
  • The kid’s cut-outs are available and the paints are being sourced; and
  • The Australia Day Committee will be presenting 6 scholarships under Ray Barnard-Browns name. 2 each to the Primary, Secondary and Special Needs schools.

Now, quick as a flash, Charles left the lectern then reappeared for another subject, Rotary Foundation (RF). The month of November is Rotary Foundation Month so this was an appropriate subject to present. Charles pointed out that:
  • RF is regarded as the most effective and well managed charity in the world;
  • It began in the early 20th century as an endowment to be focused on charity and education;
  • In 1928 this endowment was renamed and RF was established;
  • It is an offshoot from regular Rotary;
  • RF funds Rotary’s international engagements;
  • It is not a “tax” on Rotary members;
  • RF funds various scholarships;
  • It’s funds have now reached $1bUS; and
  • One of RF’s most famous and successful project has been the eradication of Polio Plus.
(I must point out here that Charles’ talk was far more factual and entertaining than I can capture. Ed)

President Greg now made his presence felt with an update on Halloween. The overall profit was $3956 of which $3000 will go to the CFA. The meeting discussed the distribution of these funds and it was decided that the Dromana Community House will receive $500. Other fund raising exercises were raised such as the blister packs collection (see below) and the sale of Xmas Cakes and Puddings. There were queries on how profitable these last items were but it was decided to proceed.

The Chair now called on Director Mike who started by thanking all those who were attending his wedding to Agnes on the 3rd and said that they were intending to have a Commitment Ceremony in the New Year. He then spoke about his upcoming plans:
  • The Committee for the next year is nearly finalised;
  • He plans to announce some changes such as –
    • A Grants Committee;
    • A Club Protection Officer;
    • The President Elect;
    • All the Speakers for each week;
    • Canvass the possibility of a Club uniform;
    • Investigate future Bunnings BBQs;
    • Look at the feasibility of conducting BBQs for the Dromana Community House, every 6 weeks;
    • Establishing a Major Projects Team;
    • Canvass the Members on the idea of having fortnightly meetings; and
    • Reminding all that there is President Elect training next year.

Lyn now spoke about the mock interviews conducted at Balcolme Grammar. The feedback from the schools had been very good and it seems that all participants had a great day.

Sergeant Pete put down his gavel to ask if any members had spare Council Rubbish Disposal Vouchers as there was still a major cleanout going on at the Buchanans.

Charles returned, yet again, to provide an update on the Eradicate Polio Movie Night. There have been bookings received from within our Cluster. The viewing time is 7:00 pm on 1st December and Charles will notify the cinema of numbers one week before that. (see below. Ed)

Now we had Lotto (won by Lyn??) and Fines. Sergeant Pete is testing how many read this Bulletin by asking questions about the content. He does catch some out, and thus increases our coffers, but there are some who remember what they’ve read. (which is a lot better than me. Ed)

Director Chris spoke about the Market preparation:
  • Volunteers are necessary;
  • He has been procuring and calibrating digital scales;
  • Currently the Twilight Market looks like having 60+ stalls,
  • Notification to local householders must be made to secure a liquor licence;
  • A flyer is being produced for the Twilight Market; and
  • The Shire has continued to publicise the Market on their information sheets.

Director Lyn returned to announce that the Red Hill Consolidated School, the Dromana Primary and Dromana Secondary College have all applied for awards from the Club.

Greg also returned to announce that the walking track under the Eagle Chairlift has a new name which is, Bunjial. (I think that is the wedge tailed eagle, but don’t quote me. Ed.)

We were reminded that it is BYO for the AGM and the meeting closed at 8:05

Polio Movie Event
Don’t forget that we have the opportunity to raise more funds for the fight against polio with this movie event.

Make sure you choose the correct site.

The Blister Pack Collection

Just a reminder to keep collecting all those pill blister packs, when you’ve done with them, or any aluminium foils. Elaine is organising a big working group session coming up soon so get them to her of Rod as soon as you can.

NORMALLY, if you cannot attend the meeting, then please send your apologies to
Rick Hayllar only by email: rhayllar@bigpond.net.au, or phone on 0409 940 033, before the MIDDAY on the Tuesday preceding the meeting.
ADDITIONALLY, Rick will send out an email requesting information on who is attending, to aid in catering.
