Happenings at last week’s Meeting
After proposing the Toast and calling for the Invocation, President Mick handed this week’s meeting over to Charles as the Chair.
Charles read out the list of apologies (luckily he didn’t lose his voice. Ed) and then called for our Guest Speaker, Nancy Gardiner, to talk to the Meeting about the Road Laws.
Nancy pointed out that the Road Laws are always being modified and are, probably, have changed a bit since we all went for our Driving Tests. She suggested that we all read up on the Laws as ignorance is no excuse if we are involved with the Police or Highway Patrol.
Next, Nancy ran through some the codes which can appear on a Driver’s licence which denote that this Licence is “conditional” on the Owner adhering to certain requirements such as wearing prescription glasses at all times while driving. It was interesting to note that, whereas the medical profession are legally bound to notify Vic Roads if they know a Driver is impaired, an Optometrist isn’t so bound. This means that if you are found to need glasses, it is up to you to notify Vic Roads.
Two other points that Nancy raised were:
- Emergency Lanes are only for Emergencies; and
- Horses still have right of way;
One last point that she raised was that all the Members should learn how to get about on Public Transport. This is not just an intellectual exercise but is a “backup” in case the worst does happen and you lose your licence.
Mick thanked Nancy her time and for the very useful information and reminders that she had left us with. He also presented her with a memento.
The Chair now called for the Presidents Report.
Mick spoke about a number of future absences and the need for replacements, namely:
- An Assistant Treasurer to take over from Bernard;
- An Assistant Bulletin Editor (don’t panic, it’s only temporary. Ed.); and
- Ross has kindly offered to stand in for Mick during his upcoming absence.
There were two final points Mick raised. The Community Garden is starting a “No Dig” garden and requires copious quantities of cardboard and the local Fire Brigade has informed the Club that they will not be participating in this year’s Halloween celebration. This later issue is still to be looked into to see if will be an issue for the Celebration.
The Chair called for the Secretary’s Report.
Mark announced:
- There seems to be some confusion at the Shire around the picnic table we are donating. Further clarification is required;
- The storage of the Club equipment may have been sorted;
- The Board meeting has been moved to Thursday;
- The future visit to Rosebud/Rye may include partners;
- The Mornington Botanical Gardens have requested the use of one of our Spinners; and
- The Club has been approached to supply Marshalls for the Around The Bay Ride in October at $50 per head. There are few details but will investigate.
There were no Directors or Members Reports so Charles called for the Lotto to be drawn and Chris won.
As we were missing the Seargent at Arms, or any of the Deputies, the Fines were postponed.
Just before closing the Meeting, Mick raised the idea that the Club sets about documenting our various processes/guidelines so that we don’t have to rely on the collective “memory” of things we’ve done. (no doubt brought on after reading the fabulous new Bulletin Instructions. Ed.) Also, he hoped that Member Meeting attendance is only suffering from a seasonal malaise and would improve.
