Hi All

Well I am personally pleased that technology has come to the rescue in lock down. It would be interesting to know how we could communicate with each other without it.

If you can think of another way, please let me know. I was almost considering writing each of you a letter but when I woke up screaming and realised that I was having a nightmare!

One of the many frustrations we have as a club is the difficulty of fund raising. So hopefully the correspondence that I have sent out recently may have given you some ideas. The RDU advertising proposal does look promising and as you had read Garry Crittenden of Garry Crittenden wines has jumped on the idea.

So if any of you have contacts with a business that might like to promote themselves in the RDU why not contact them.

I am looking forward to finding out about Terry O'Day's past next meeting?

Brighten up your nights and help keep our musician employed,

Carol and I currently subscribed to a series of concerts as mentioned below. These we watched in our family room while enjoying a tagin dinner with wine from the sponsor.- Garry Crittenden wines.

There are many streamed performances currently to satisfy all tastes. Our particular current passion is small groups of musicians aka chamber music. The three concerts we subscribed to were with “The Melbourne Digital Concert Hall”.

Some will be surprised to learn that on last Saturday evening the trio played a spectacular arrangement of the tunes from Porgy and Bess, apart from the Beethoven and Brahms and on Sunday afternoon the Nexas Quartet ( saxophones), George Gershwin's American In Paris was part of the performance

To subscribe to the performances one has to pay a relatively small amount say about $25. That is less than the cost of petrol to drive to Melbourne and back let alone the parking and the dinner, and interval drinks.

One subscribes to the performances online with your laptop or PC. When the performance is about to commence you click on the link supplied and watch the whole thing on your laptop or PC, or even better see below -

Now every one has a different set of entertainment equipment. In my case  my stereo system and TV are interconnected to provide better sound quality than a TV can provide.

The lap top I connect via an HDMI cable to my stereo amplifier, and the stereo amplifier being connected to the TV allows as to enjoy the concert on a reasonable sized screen with sound quality approaching a live performance.

I recommend, in these difficult times, trying this out. I improves the quality of your life and helps sustain our performers.

See you all on Thursday Evening

Rick

Carol's News

Our daughter Sari phoned to say she would like a painting for her paediatric rooms in Warragul. I thought of Wendy Orr's story of Nim's Island. Wendy was thrilled. She lives in Arthurs Seat Road and is a multi award winning author who has two movies produced about her books. Rotarians may also know her husband Tom through his CFA work; I am having great fun painting Wendy's adventurous sea creatures. Life, so many times has that magic six degrees of separation.

From Barb Byatt
I married the love of my life seems like forever ago.  Col and I started ‘Stepping Out’ together 50 odd years ago. Both have had very busy working lives in South Gippsland and are both thoroughly enjoying retirement after deciding to live permanently in our holiday home here at Safety Beach six years ago. We have both been having the time of our lives travelling the globe together (on hold at the moment).  Just to mention a few of the amazing places visited.  Island hopping the Falklands and Galápagos Islands, Christmas and Cocos Isles, the Greek Islands and of course Ireland itself. Seems to be a theme happening here.
I have loved my involvement with Rotary.  Col and I were very lucky to be involved with a 4 week student exchange to Turkey organised by Leongatha Rotary, schools and the RSL.  We chaperoned our Australian students on the inaugural trip in 2010 which included visiting so many places and a trip to Gallipoli for the dawn service.  Certainly an experience never to be forgotten.
I nominate Julie Barnes.

Discussion at the last meeting

Harry has proposed a plan to turn used containers into housing for the homeless.  It will a “whole of club” project and all members will have a say in its planning and delivery.  Harry’s proposal is included in Bob’s email on the 6th August.  It was questioned where the containers would be sited; Harry said that his is yet to be decided.

Tony said the club’s facebook page should be better utilised and he was going to see how to improve its use.

Greg corresponding with an East Gippsland Club the purchase of a “Lucus Mill” which can be used to mill fence posts from fallen trees. See the description of the project below. Greg raised the question whether we could raise money through club members or through some sort of cloud funding.  Greg though he would look at possible approaches. John Fallow, from Bairnsdale Rotary Club, said that every effort would be appreciated.

The District Centenary Project for the walk around the bay was discussed.  The project was to put different infrastructure around the trail, but the foreshore committee were not keen on anything else adjacent to the path. Greg, is liaison officer, felt that this project was not very promising.

Andrew was thinking about the importance of bees to the environment and thought we could establish a vegetable patch for school children.  It was suggested that there could be an opportunity at special schools.

Rick said had raised over $500 by sleeping in his car. See a photograph in the last Club Bulletin.  Carol spoke about Stan Grant’s book and suggested that it is a good read.  Peter and Mary have been forced to close their shop and will be without an income for 6 weeks. President Rick said that we need to support each other.

The Lucus Mill Project.

An email to Greg Fitzgerald from Peter Sindrey of the Rotary Club of Lakes Entrance and Committee Member of East Gippsland Rotary Fire Aid discussed the possible ways that the Rotary Club of Dromana could assist in the fire recovery efforts.  He outlined the possible project to purchase a “Lucas Mill”.

The email continues:

“The best way to describe the unit is to refer you to the website – www.lucasmill.com – which provides full details and a video demonstration of the unit.  The Mill is a portable unit that can be moved from property to property.  There are many properties that have fallen trees, generally ASH TIMBER, that could be cut and used for fencing.  Lack of fencing is a big issue in East Gippsland, given that so much was destroyed by the fires.  On many properties, boundary fencing has been replaced, thanks to the help of many people and organisations such as BlazeAid.  However, much more fencing is still required and costs to provide fence posts can be beyond the resources of individual land owners.

“The Lucas Mill is designed for this sort of work. The idea is that there are 3-4 people who have experience with operating the Lucas Mill.  They would assist the land owners in how to use the unit and the timber cut would go to making new fences for properties.  Excess posts which are produced would be donated to properties that do not have access to fallen timber.  No standing trees will be cut down in this project – the trees to be used are those that have been fallen for fencing and clearing roads or building sites, Some property owners have suggested they would loan out tractors to assist with moving the trees.

“We see this program as extremely useful, and important, in the recovery effort.

“The cost of the Lucas Mill unit is $18,000.  Our Committee has already approached some Rotary Clubs in the Melbourne metropolitan area and we have received $7,000 towards the costs.

“If your Club would be interested in a small donation towards this purchase, we would be extremely grateful.

On the lighter side ...

To Whom It May Concern
Trevor Adams, my assistant programmer, can always be found
hard at work in his cubicle. Trevor works independently, without
wasting company time talking to colleagues. Trevor never
thinks twice about assisting fellow employees, and he always
finishes given assignments on time… Often he takes extended
measures to complete his work, sometimes skipping coffee
breaks. Trevor is a dedicated individual who has absolutely no
vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound
knowledge in his field.. I firmly believe that Trevor can be
classed as a high-calibre employee, the type that cannot be
dispensed with. Consequently, I truly recommend that Trevor be
promoted to executive management, and a proposal will be
executed as soon as possible.

Yours Sincerely
Bill Manager
