Happenings at last weeks’ meeting
The start of a new calendar year found us in a meeting with the stated overall subject of New Membership. Greg welcomed all the members and looked forward to successes for the Club in this new year.
Bernard gave a quick update on the financial successes the Club achieved up to the middle of January:
- The Two Bays Fun Run BBQ raised $764.61;
- Dromana Hub Spinner raised $460.85;
- McCrae Spinner raised $129.65;
- The December Twilight Market raised $3185.44 for the Dromana Community House; and
- Carols By Candlelight raised $769.75.
Secretary Mark ran through the contents of the Club P.O. Box and other subjects:
- Miscellaneous correspondence such a information from the Dolphin Research Institute;
- The Rosebud Hospital Appeal;
- Australian Rotary Health Annual Report;
- The development of the Rotary Education Nights, for the Club, is in progress; and
- A reminder on the upcoming Rotary International Convention in Melbourne this year.
Rick briefly announced that Adrian will need assistance in coming to future meetings due to limits on his driving.
Greg now ran through the various Club committees and their members. (see lists below) He also elected Merv as the on-going Host of our meetings.
Bob spoke about the Australia Day Children’s stall that the Club puts on each year. He called for volunteers to help run the stall so that the children can enjoy themselves slapping paint onto the animal cut-outs. (and less paint on themselves. Ed) Bob will send out task details prior to the event.
Chris raised the conundrum the Club has over the Bunnings BBQ vs the January Market on Saturday 28th. Suggestions on resourcing were discussed and Chris will work through some of the ideas.
Lotto was won by Rick and Sergeant Peter began his quest for more money in the New Year with a rather subdued effort even though he fined actions from the Two Bays BBQ.
Now the meeting was handed back to Secretary Mark to lead the discussion on New Member initiatives. He began by asking a series of questions of the meeting:
- Is the Venue OK? Response Yes;
- Are the Meals OK? Response Yes;
- Are the Meetings interesting? Response No, Speakers were better in previous years;
- Is the Fines session OK? Response Yes;
- Does the Club need the Sergeant? It was pointed out that the Sergeant is a required Club Official;
- Is a Chair required? Yes, as it was pointed out that this gives experience to new members;
- Could Zoom be used in future meetings? Response Yes;
- Should we change the meeting Frequency? Response No; and
- Should we target a specific Age Group?;
At this point the dialogue became a bit more general than the structured discussion Mark had been orchestrating. (Admittedly one of the “anarchists” was your Ed.) The trend was around who, or what, was the Club trying to market itself as and how would we proceed. At one point Anne suggested a questionnaire be developed to hand out at the Market.
Greg introduced the information that there are a number of professional/business organisations which have started up in the Dromana area as a result of the lack of a Chamber of Commerce. This led the discussion in the direction of how the Club could find common purpose with these organisations. (Once again the “anarchists” threw in their two bobs worth and probably didn’t help. Ed.) Greg finally recommended that all Committees attempt to identify Projects to discover potential Member pools. He also gave all existing Members some “homework”. What are your thoughts on attracting new Members?
After this, hopefully, thought provoking discussion the meeting finished around 8:20.
