Charles was the Chair this week, so it was up to him to juggle the Run Sheet, who was in attendance and the serving of the meal. To this end he called for the draw of Lotto, which was won by Greg and then moved on to the Fines. Acting Sergeant Merv issued Fines based on his research and then it was Fines from the Floor. This brought up the interesting fact that, by a miss-labelling of the cost of a bag of apples, the inaugural Fruit and Veg’ stall at the Market made a loss.
Charles now called on Secretary Mark for his report.
Secretary Mark announced:
- The e-mail regarding the Rotary Youth Exchange Program will be passed to Director Lyn for discussion;
- There is a Board meeting next (this) week; and
- The necessary updates to the Club Bye-laws will need to be accomplished and distributed so that they can be voted on at the next AGM.
Treasurer Bernard now announced the Market results:
- $1,835 – Stalls;
- $134.70 – Spinner;
- $546.34 – BBQ; and
- -$139.77 – Fruit and Veg; resulting in
- $2416.27 – Total.
Now it was time for the TMG which this week was delivered by Ailsa. Her subject was the trip that she and her sister took to the UK and France in May this year.
After 2 years of planning, and while the airfares remained reasonable they took flight to Gatwick, in a half full plane, and thence by train to London. After a day in London they went to a “small village” to see a famous gardener – which was really good. Following on from that visit they travelled on to Bath but were soon back in London for a Garden Tour which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Ailsa was not working from any notes so the next part of her trip was filled out with clarifications from the ex-pat’s in the audience.
Now Ailsa and her sister ventured to Cornwall and thence to the Scilly Isles via a 12 seater plane and a boat. The name of the destination island was not remembered but it was amazing because it was sub-tropical, something which you don’t expect in the UK. Ailsa recommended joining any of the many Garden Tours available in the UK because the range of gardens is quite remarkable.
Back to the mainland (main island?) and they attended the Chelsea Flower Show, for the 3rd time. While having lunch on the lawn they were subjected to an English storm with thunder, lightning and hail. They were drowned but eventually found cover and hid till it passed.
Leaving the UK they trained on to Paris where they found that the soccer was on and getting a taxi was a major task. As she was running out of time (3 minutes, remember) Ailsa skipped over her time in France (cheese eating surrender monkeys) and spoke about coming home and the difficulties in completing the electronic Declaration on the phone. The Declaration in Dubai is on paper so that was smooth going and on finally arriving back in Oz all went smoothly and they were not hauled off to Detention.
Charles thanked Ailsa and the meeting applauded her skill as a raconteur.
Greg gave us an update on the Halloween preparations:
- The Shire are on-board;
- There is notification in the Town Crier where there is escalating interest;
- All eyes are on the future weather forecasting;
- The CFA will be helping and will still sell the drinks;
- We will be offering Roast Beef Rolls, which Chris is co-ordinating;
- A sound system is still required; and
- Labour and willing hands may be an issue;
Not associated with Halloween, we are still waiting on any progress regarding the lunch table at Safety Beach and the Regionalisation vote went ahead.
Charles now designated Bernard to read the apologies and then called for Directors reports.
Chris gave an update on the Market;
- The Market raised $200 for 2nd Bite;
- Social Media response is very positive and helping to get the Market good publicity;
- The Fruit and Veg’ stall will be moving;
- There will be a new Entertainer at the next Market and there are 6 more waiting to come along;
- “Welcome to Springtime” may be a new theme with Fashion options;
- The free sites for community groups seems to be a success so we may offer more; and
- As well as the Twilight Market there may be up to 3 similarly “themed” Markets over the year.
Charles now spoke about Membership and how the survey he sent out three weeks ago has not received a significant response. He urged those who are yet to respond to please do so because a new Membership Drive is important to the future of the Club. He also reiterated that joining the Centurion Club would facilitate more Paul Harris Awards and also contribute to the Club coffers.
Rod announced that the Foils Project was generating community interest and can be expanded as it goes on.
Greg finished off by pointing out the Film offer for Polio Plus (see below) and how we should seriously look at this opportunity.
Charles thanked one and all and closed the meeting at 8:05.
Film Offer for Polio Plus
For many years, the
Polio Movie Event has been a very popular way for clubs to
raise funds for Rotary’s number one priority, Ending Polio. It’s also an opportunity for Rotary members and people in our communities to have some fun together.
This year’s movie is
The Lost King, the story of the rediscovery, by an amateur historian, of the five centuries old remains of Richard III… in a Leicester carpark. Critics describe it as
“an incredible and inspiring true story about perseverance and not taking no for an answer”.
The movie will be released to the Australia and New Zealand public on Boxing Day, but the great news is that a pre-release of the movie is available for Rotary clubs during the week of Thursday 1st to Wednesday 7th December.
To arrange an event, talk to the group booking person at your cinema and make sure they plan to offer this movie to the public once it’s released. The cinema can then make all the arrangements to source the movie from the distributor,
Transmission Films — clubs don’t need to get involved in that. The amount paid to the cinema is usually about $10 per seat (that’s up to the cinema) and a typical ticket price might be $20 — and that’s up to you. Please see the
Movie Conditions below.
To assist you in promoting the event, we’ve created a PowerPoint template that your club can use to create your own marketing materials:
Simply insert your club name and event details. You may then want to:
- save it as a PDF and arrange for your local printer to produce posters and handouts
- save it as a graphics file and post it to your social media, website, newsletter, etc.
Let’s make this year’s Polio Movie Event a blockbuster — and End Polio Now!
