Happenings at last weeks’ meeting
Harry opened the meeting with an introduction and a welcome to all our Guests. He then handed the Meeting over to Greg Fitzgerald to chair.
Because this meeting was going to involve a very interesting talk, Greg decided to diverge from the normal run-sheet and call for the Lotto and Fines up front. Lotto was won by one of our Guests and Merv was very generous with his fines (your Ed kept his head down and managed to not get fined this week, is this a new trend?).
Harry returned to give our Guests a brief introduction to Rotary. Starting with a small group in Chicago in 1905 Rotary has now grown into a world-wide organisation of approximately 35,000 clubs. The Rotary Wheel has been the emblem from the beginning but was formalised in 1912 and, adopted internationally, it has been unchanged since 1924. Harry spoke about the Rotary values and the work done locally and internationally, paying particular attention to projects such as the eradication of Polio.
Greg now introduced our Guest Speaker, Belinda Rodman, from the eMPower Group.
Belinda explained that eMPower is a Community Decarbonisation and Renewable Energy Network focusing on the Mornington Peninsular. It is an initiative, championed by the Mornington Peninsular Shire, to engage with local communities to work collectively to provide the information on how to set about reducing our dependence on carbon fuels and also to provide a framework to harness the local community efforts. The framework revolves around the establishment of a network of community-level Satellite Groups.
As a community group, what role will the Satellite Groups play?
- They will engage, educate and empower local residents, non-profits and businesses to take individual and collective actions to decarbonise their energy use.
- They will advocate for and influence legislative authorities and energy distribution corporations to drive rapid and equitable decarbonisation.
- In short - they are ‘Community-first’ championing for a triple bottom line (environmental, social, financial) to ensure common equity and benefit.
With the partnership of Mornington Peninsular Shire the Satellite Groups will work with the Metro Community Power Hub (for Knowledge, funding & logistical support) and Other Key Actors (Energy distributors, retailers, investors, local industries, commercial developers, state government).
The Community Decarbonising has a Simplified Scaling Process:
- Efficiency Program - Enables constant efficiency improvements leading to ongoing reduction in energy use per household/business, making the job of decarbonisation simpler and smaller.
- Solar Installs - Enables individual resident/business/non-profit energy decarbonisation & cost savings (through private investment, grants, community ownership models, commercial etc).
- Community Batteries - Enables more solar installs on the grid, storage of over-supply in peak periods & generates community investor returns.
- Virtual Energy Networks - Enables solar generated energy to be traded with & used by non solar homes/businesses at reduced prices.
Belinda’s presentation was full of valuable information and contained the following time-line:
Instead of trying to summarise more of the night, and the additional information that Belinda has provided, I had intended inserting the two presentations here. However, I have run in to a bit of a knowledge/technical glitch and can't seem to get the files copied across for you to read. All I can suggest is, if you want this extra info', that you contact either myself or Greg and we'll email them through to you. In the meantime I'll go back to school and try and correct my knowledge gaps
.
The night was getting on so questions from the flour were limited. Next, Greg thanked Belinda for taking the time to talk to us and present a fascinating presentation.
Mike Smith very quickly informed the meeting that he has finally managed to get our monthly Market listed in the next Peninsular Buzz Newsletter. A great effort that is much appreciated.
On this high note the meeting closed at 8:10.

“To All Members
The Club has received a request for volunteers to collect for the Salvos at McCrae Plaza on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of May 2022. It has been suggested that we be in attendance between 10am and 4pm which could be broken into two shifts.
The Club has provided several volunteers each Red Shield Appeal for many years now and we would like to continue this service. We realize that 28th May is Market Day so we will have difficulty then. If you wish to help please contact
