Happenings at last week’s Meeting
We were at the Sailing Club for our regular Meeting. Pete was Sergeant and called the Meeting to order then passed it over to Charles who welcomed our Guests, Patrick Binyon, Carly Cole and Sam Castrechini. Carly and Sam were with us to watch as Pauline Porcaro was inducted into the Club.
Briefly, Charles handed the Meeting to Mark as the Chair. Mark read out the apologies: John, Agnes, Geoff and Marion and then called on Charles for the Induction.
Charles gave a brief speech on the values around Rotary and the values that the Club espouses. He then welcomed Pauline to the Club and presented her with her Club badges and certificate.
Pauline gave a speech of thanks and explanation of what she hopes to contribute to the Club in the way of her expertise but also her commitment to introducing more people to the value of joining Rotary.
The Members now rose and welcomed Pauline as our newest Member.
As he was still at the lectern when Pauline took her seat, Charles decided to present his Presidents Report:
- He attended a Dromana Australia Day Committee meeting at the Men’s Shed. The cutouts for our stand will be ready and it won’t be too long before we have to start counting volunteers for the event;
- The Southern Peninsular Community Support Centre AGM. The situation on the Peninsular is not getting any better, in fact it is getting worse. There is more pressure on the Centre and less funding. Even with that in mind the Centre presented our Club with a Certificate of Appreciation; and
- The Frankston and Mornington Peninsular group of Rotary Clubs has met. The top priority for this group must be tackling the homeless crisis. To this end Charles is going to ask the participating Clubs to join in the Tiny Houses Project. He sees this as a huge opportunity for Rotary to reach out to the Community.
Mark now resumed his role as Chair and then proceeded with the Secretary’s Report:
- The District 9815 AGM is upcoming;
- A Gala Fundraising Ball for 9815 will be held on 30th October;
- The Jetty Road Brewery will again be the venue for the next Committees Meeting;
- The Red Hill RSL will be having a Remembrance Day function;
- Our Club AGM will be held on 13th November; and
- Our Open Gardens on 17th November will require some more volunteers.
After Dinner Mark called for Directors Reports.
Mark announced that the Foundation Movie Night was a success, raising $280 towards Polio Prevention. In December a talk will be given to the Club on the Rotary Foundation.
Chris pointed out that:
- There were many other Open Gardens scheduled for the same weekend as ours so we had to increase our promotion effort;
- Last Saturdays BBQ at Bunnings raised $2700 approx.;
- The October Market signs are out and working well. The Market volunteers will be required from 6:30 and the Market will feature the new Food Court. There was a discussion on logistics but all was settled.
- The next BBQ date is January 5th; and
- The next Two Bays Fun Run is in February.
Tony announced that the banking from the BBQ, the Community Garden and the Movie was $3441.
Merv pointed out that the Bonfire at Hillview for Halloween needed to be collected and built. He proposed a working bee for Halloween morning.
Joseph spoke on the preparations for Halloween:
- Deployment of signs;
- How we will place and handle the donation buckets and spinner;
- To all those Members who have a Facebook profile, please place an “event post” for the Halloween Night; and
- After a discussion on the general logistics, it was decided that volunteers should arrive at 4:00 to 4:30.
After this there was a quick Lotto draw (won by your Ed.) and a very quick Fines Session (Only one fine, your Ed.)
Mark now called on Lyn for her Person Behind the Badge talk.
Lyn’s profession was as a teacher, and she is still in contact with many of her ex-students. She has been in Dromana for six years and is currently in the process of moving house. As she clears things out, she is finding many memories. This is not sad, and she is enjoying seeing things again, although some of those memories are quite surprising and amazing. She is moving to Mornington to her son’s property and is looking forward to moving on.
Adrian announced that his son-in-law, being of the Ba’ Hi’ religion, is currently in Haifa and is trying to get home. He commended him to the Club and asked for our wishes of good luck.
Greg confirmed the value of the Halloween Night to the Community. He also pointed out that any accommodation that is provided for the homeless has to be “liveable”.
Charles announced that there will be no Meeting next Wednesday and declared the Meeting closed at 8:00.
October Market
Just a few photos of another successful Market, on a lovely sunny day.
