All the Best to Trudy and we hope she’s feeling Better
Happenings at last weeks’ meeting
Harry opened the meeting then handed the meeting over to the Chair for the night, Greg Fitzgerald.
Greg quickly took charge and just as quickly passed the meeting over to Secretary Chris.
Secretary Chris ran through the apologies and then reported on:
- The Santos Science Experience is returning on 28-30 June at RMIT University. This is a program for year 9 and 10 school children and we have promoted it in previous years;
- The Council of Legislations is usually held every 3 years and, post Covid, is being held in Chicago with representation form Australian Districts. As we know, Clubs are governed by our by-laws and constitutions but the Council looks at improving Rotary “operationally”.
Next up, President Harry was back with us and spoke about:
- The Board has decided to donate our next SkyHydrant to Tonga via the Tongan Development Community Trust because of the unknowns around the situation in Ukrain;
- Tonight’s meeting was a preparation for the Change Over with copies of the new positions available for discussion;
- The staffing of the next Market was raised and volunteers sought. (just to let the cat out of the bag, the volunteers arrived and the Market was a success. Ed.).
Chris chimed in again to make the point that with 50+ stalls we needed to get things running right with a bit of re-organising needed to cope for more stalls than normal.
Time for Lotto (won by Greg !!!!!!) and Fines. This week Merv was away so Ross zeroed in on people who walk, or don’t walk, dogs (got a few but, once again, catching your Ed – there is a pattern forming. Should I get the media involved? A Bulletin fight-back?).
There were no Directors report this week but a number of thoughts/issues were raised:
- The new Years positions are published for review. Any concerns to be raised with Greg;
- Why don’t we have a Rotary Mural commissioned?;
- It was proposed that Col Byatt remain as a Club Member and it was suggested he eventually become an Honorary Member;
- It was asked how we support the local Community? It was pointed out that we have done a lot for the local Community House and a number of other organisations on the Peninsular.
In the “My Story To Date” section of the Meeting (which is a long overdue re-naming of the old “Man Behind the Badge” section) we were presented with Rob Alexander.
Rob told us of his early life, being born in Penang where his father was a trader and then going to school at Carey College. His family had a house across the road from the school which made his on-time arrival at school pretty easy. After school he studied Geology at Melbourne University but failed after 1 year and went off to work at a plastics company.
From the plastics company, Rob put himself through a course at Dookie Agricultural College where he met his future wife Jane. After marriage, and Dookie, Rob and Jane moved to Bendigo where Rob worked in a piggery then:
- Melbourne at an egg producer (also producing Sarah and Chris and, later 6 grandchildren);
- Western District working with Ampol;
- Next was Hautico – Yates;
- Self Employed in Hamilton (joining Apex), Maffra, Mt. Martha (making bird seed shapes and then flowers).
Rob has been inducted into Rotary Clubs 6 times and believes that Rotary Clubs are teams which should be accessed to achieve a community end.
Rob was thanked for his entertaining talk.
Prior to closing the meeting was informed that the next meeting was a Ladies Night and would involve the presentation of a cheque for the proceeds of our Twilight Market to the Southern Peninsular Community Support and Information Centre.
Greg closed the meeting at 8:10.
What is Rule 85?
“The “Rule of 85” is the commonly used term for a specific type of excused absence as specified in Article 9, Section 3(b) of the standard club constitution. This has been updated in the 2016 Council on Legislation.
A member's absence shall be excused if the member has at least 20 years of service and their age plus years of service is equal to, or greater than, 85. The member must also notify the club secretary in writing of their desire to be excused from attendance and then receive board approval.
Please note this report will only display members who meet this requirement if both their Birth Date and Date Joined Rotary are entered in their member profile.”
