VALE Ray Barnard-Brown

It is with sadness that we mourn the passing of our friend and life member Ray. We extend our sympathy to Elaine and her family.

Ray, after joining our club from Melbourne South, has been a major driving force in our club and community. Ray was a very good artist and along with helping to run the Rotary Dromana Art show he also managed to win the best in show. Ray was always one to put in, he held the President's position, Secretary and many others. He was always there at working bees and sausage sizzles. We will all miss his cheerful face at our meetings.

I would like to remind members to email Michael Anderson by Monday, or at the latest Tuesday morning, to book a meal and let him know you will attend the Wednesday meeting.

Happenings at last weeks’ meeting

The meeting started on a sombre note with President Greg calling for a minutes silence in honour of our friend and club member, Ray Barnard-Brown.

Once the meeting resumed, Greg read out the apologies and then handed the meeting over to be chaired by Ailsa Hemphil.

Ailsa’s first order of business was to call for Lotto to be drawn, which was won by Merv. Next, Pete conducted a lengthy and comprehensive fines session. (Prior to the meeting starting he had even talked people into incriminating themselves - with his steely look and commanding presence.(?))

Ailsa cut the fines session short and called for the Directors reports:

Joseph gave an update on the progress of the Wine and Beer night. Helpers are required to take care of the more normal tasks around a night like this. He also pointed out the various benefits that will accrue to the Club from a night like this and future events that will build on its success.

Harry sent a card around for all members to note their thought for Elaine. As he was not able to attend the Change-Over Night, Harry presented the President’s Award to Merv Prossor.

Next Director was Mike Smith who spoke about the flyers being prepared for the “Xmas in July” market. He asked for the meetings approval for the creation of a Club phone number for inclusion on our promotional material. This was approved unanimously and will be announced at the next Board meeting on 20th July. The Beer and Wine night is also being promoted via our social media.

Secretary Michael has decided not to repeat District news that all members will have received by e-mail. (I’m not sure we’re going to be hearing a lot from the Secretary this year)

Pete Anderson appealed for more council tip vouchers so that the remaining old tires at Ann Buchanan’s house can be taken to the tip.

Director Chris announced:
  • that the signage on the Club trailer will be completed in time for the next Market,
  • The Mornington Citizens Brass Band and the Community House Choir have been engaged for our “Xmas In July” Market,
  • The Club still needs a fruit and veg’ “organisation” which can commit to being at our markets on an ongoing basis,
  • The meeting discussed the option of providing incentives to draw in more stalls especially during the quieter months,
  • We may provide stalls on a regular basis to community organisations,
  • There will be a handout created detailing future Market dates,
  • Market volunteers are still, and always, required so as not to leave the work in the hands of the same people all the time.
President Greg announced:
  • The next working bee at Hillview is being organised,
  • There has been no preparation regarding this years Halloween event. Greg is looking for help in the organising of this event. I lively discussion ensued with many idea and thoughts being thrown about. The one agreed constant was that the event must go ahead this year or it will never happen again,
  • In future, Board meetings will be held each month after the Club Night prior to the Market.
The meeting finished at 8:00.

Renaming of the GIG.

As part of the sweeping changes that our new President is going to inflict/impose/meet out to the Club, (I jest), he has discussed with your Ed the idea of renaming the GIG segment of the meeting. This is by way of refreshing the segment and also giving it a more meaningful title.

So this Bulletin is the last one with a GIG. I’m suggesting it is now “On My Mind in Three Minute” (OMM3M), isn’t that so 21st Century? Any other suggestions?

A quote for Ray.

I came across this quote recently and it stuck with me. It was by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Poet, Playwright and Philosopher. I think it suits as a memory of Ray.

”Life is like a play: it's not the length, but the excellence of the acting that matters.”
