N.B. (An abbreviation for the Latin phrase Nota Bene meaning “note well”)
To give some notice to those I nominate for each weeks Chair there has been a suggestion made. This will be discussed at one of our Meetings but here is my suggestion. I publish a list of five people, the Chair for this week (Chair), the Chair for the next week (Future Chair 1), the Chair for the following week (Future Chair 2). Etcetera and so on up to Future Chair 4. This will give the nominees a chance to prepare and, if the Chair for the week doesn’t turn up (quelle horreur!!) we will have a backup. Think about it and discuss at the Meeting. (I’ll be glad when we do talk about it so I can delete this section. Ed.)
Happenings at last week’s Meeting
President Mick began the meeting by welcoming our Guests; Annette Kerwin, Elaines daughter, Nurse Unit Manager Andrea Sutton and Nurse Practitioner Julie Chimyong both from Rosebud Hospital. Mick then handed the Meeting over to the Chair for this week, Ross whitehead.
Ross read out the apologies for this week and then invited our two Guests Speakers, Andrea and Julie, to the lectern. They are from the Dialysis Unit at the Rosebud Hospital and their subject is Kidney Health.
Kidneys filter all the toxins and waste from our blood and dispose of these wastes via the urine. These filters are called nephrons, hence the name diabetic nephritis.
Some of the causes of Kidney Disease are:
- High Blood Pressure, (which can also be a symptom);
- Diabetes;
- Too much salt or sugar in the diet; and
- Some medications, if over used.
To help in keeping the kidneys healthy drink lots of fluids, especially water, and have an annual checkup. If you begin to feel unwell then the damage has already occurred.
Rosebud Hospital has a dialysis unit and dialysis involves having the blood cleaned during 5 hour sessions every 2 days. There are three dialysis machines on the Peninsular and they cater to 100+ patients, 80% of whom are diabetics. The machines costs in the order of $70K each and during the treatments the nurses try and provide such things as puzzles, games, audio books, books and art programs.
They try and make it fun during the long hours but any activity can only be done one-handed.

Ross now called on Mark for the Secretaries Report:
- A Board Meeting is scheduled for next week;
- At the next Meeting we will be discussing the scheduling of future Chairs and issues around how the Club can be involved ion the Homeless Crisis;
- For the 4th October Meeting we are invited to the Rosebud/Rye Rotary Club, including a meal;
- A meeting will be held next week regarding the Dromana Community House; and
- The Dromana Association A.G.M will be held on the 10th August and will include the payments of dues.
Ross now called up Mick for the Presidents Report:
- Thanks to all those who turned up to last weeks Meeting at SPCIC;
- Mick attended a Cluster Zoom Meeting on the subject of what the Cluster could do to increase our impact for the Peninsular. He found that Heather from Rosebud/Rye had already done a lot of research:
- 1000 people – 16% sleeping rough on the foreshore;
- 4th largest homeless population in Victoria;
- No funded crisis accommodation on the Peninsula;
- 51% of renters in the Flinders Electorate are in financial stress;
- No Government funded agencies providing preventative case management or housing support to those at high risk of becoming homeless;
- MP Shire has set aside land in Hastings, Mornington and Rosebud.
- The Club is still going to pursue a separate Project as discussed with Jeremy at SPCIC.
The Monthly Treasurers Report will be presented at the next Board Meeting.
Ross now called for Directors Reports.
Charles reported that the Fathers Day parking option was not going ahead but there was a possible engagement around Movember coming up.
Lyn thanked all the volunteers for the Mock Interviews at Balcombe College on 23rd August.
Rob announced that his Membership Groups are under construction. He also raised the idea of the Club reviving the Trailer Raffles as these were great publicity.
Tony supported the idea of the Trailer Raffles as they were good at promoting the Club and the money raised could also be used in Club promotions.
Lotto was drawn (I think it was Merv but I was distracted by writing down that Harry and Trudy are both unwell in Queensland. We wish them well. Ed.)
Now we had an extended session of Fines for:
- Drinking 2 litres of water (don’t ask me why this incurred a fine, I was drinking wine. Ed.);
- Various phones going off;
- People having been on holiday;
- Adrian for talking (it’s a bit of a fines standard. Ed.);
- Those who don’t mute their phones (a bit of double dipping on the phone use. Ed).
Elaine thanked all those who have provided lunch (Charles and Tony to name two.Ed) and thanked Annette for attending.
President Mick thanked our Guest Speakers for the valuable information on looking after ourselves, thanked all those for attending and closed the meeting at 8:00.
