Happenings at last week’s Meeting
Back at the Sailing Club for our usual Dinner Meeting.
Charles kicked things off with the Toast and Invocation and then introduced our Guest Speakers. (With a mispronunciation. Ed) He then handed the Meeting over to the nights Chair, Geoff.
As Chair, Geoff read out the Apologies and then introduced our two Guest Speakers, Eli Dux and Charlie Hosking. After representation from Eli’s mother, the Club had sponsored both boys to the Science Experience at RMIT University.
Eli with Mum and brother.
Charlie with his grandparents and brothers.
The boys gave a very detailed explanation of what they did at the Experience.
It was a “hands on” introduction to the many aspects of science. They both chose different streams to pursue over the time and gave us quite a list of activities. Such as:
- Sumo Bots – where they built robots that competed against others;
- Ice & Salt – where saw how salt water can be colder than normal ice;
- Rockets Building – an introduction to aeronautics;
- Firefighting Robots – to detect light and move towards it;
- A Virtual Experience Lab;
- Radiation in Medicine;
- Pharmacy & Chemistry;
- How the Stomach works;
- Modelling the spread of a virus;
- Stride and Balance testing – for athletes;
- Listening to PhD student introduce their theses; and
- Meeting current Uni students.
All in all, it was a packed timetable, and both the students felt it made a huge difference to their future plans.
Having thanked both the boys for presentation, the Chair presented them with souvenir pens (Very high tech. Ed.) and then called for the Presidents Report.
Charles’ Report was just that there would be a new venue for the next Committees Meeting.
The Chair called for the Secretary’s Report.
Wayne:
- Congratulated Eli and Charlie on their presentation and said they represented their peer group very well;
- Read out the various Anniversaries and Birthdays;
- Announced that Peter Greenaway was moving up to the city and would have a Social Night at his house as a farewell; and
- Noted that Mike Smith is still on hospital but is acting upbeat and will be released soon.
The Chair now called for any Directors Reports.
Mark also added his congratulations to Eli and Charlie and said that the Club will definitely repeat the sponsorship next year. He mentioned that Mike is not as good as he had hoped but is progressing. He took the opportunity to announce his granddaughters 21st.
Chris announced that Elaine is still in hospital with the doctors concerned about her living arrangements. He also thanked all those who helped out at the Market.
Pauline said that she was feeling a little better and will be back to updating the web site blog. She also mentioned that the Market social media response is looking good and improving all the time.
The Lotto was drawn, and won by Anne (Helps if you’ve bought most of the tokens. Ed.). Greg conducted the Fines session with his usual forensic approach.
The Chair now handed the Meeting back to the President.
Charles added his encouragement to Eli and Charlie and the Meeting closed at 7:50.
