President's Message
member photo
Hi Members, I still have some health issues to sort out. Hopefully I will be back next week.

Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard on the weekend. The Market and Bunnings BBQ were a great success.

We need to come up with some inspiring projects.

District is very concerned about the conference. They have suggested putting a table together for the Kevin Sheedy breakfast on Sunday 26th for $40 per head. I am planning to attend and I will try to get some people from the Dromana Football club to join us. Let me know if you can join me.

Late notice: We have a guest speaker this week Mr Greg Holland.  His talk is ( Biodiversity in your Backyard )

Happenings at last weeks’ meeting

Greg was not well this week so Mark took on the role of Temporary President. We had a number of missing hierarchy members so the usual roles were spread over limited individuals.

Charles was the Chair this week and called for the Secretary’s and Directors reports.

Secretary Mark stepped up and his first subject was the District Conference next month. Currently we have very few members that intend going Mark asked the meeting what they thought was the worth of the Conferences. Responses from the members endorsed the value of the Conferences and centred around:
  • The number of thought provoking speakers (usually 50% are interesting);
  • The chance to network;
  • Spreading information across Clubs; and
  • The opportunity to learn.
Director Harry announced that a RAWCS meeting was scheduled for the 25th February to provide information on future projects.

Director Lyn read out a thankyou letter from one of the Rotary Dromana Award winners. It was suggested that future winners could be invited to attend one of our meetings. Lyn mentioned that the Secondary College was sending an excursion to Cambodia and the Club may wish to assist in some way. Lastly, she displayed a collection of banner that she had from her time as President. She is donating it to the Club for our archives.

Rob suggested the Club expedite the use of Zoom for all Club, Board and Committee meetings. It was recommended that Charles could supply technical support (though I’m not too sure how enthusiastic he was at this proposal. Ed.)

After dinner Chris thanked all those, including the Buchanan family, who made the Market/Bunnings BBQ date clash work successfully. He also drew the meetings attention to the new sign that has been erected in Pier Street, near the Salvo’s store, celebrating the Rotary 50 years in Dromana and the 100 years in Australia. It will be there for a number of months and, hopefully, will generate some community interest in the Club.

Bob spoke on the preparations for the Australia Day festivities on the Dromana foreshore. He also pointed out that the Australia Day Committee were recognising Ray and Elaine Barnard-Browns contributions to the community by awarding six Ray Barnard-Brown Youth Awards from recipients from three local schools.

Now it was time for Lotto, which was won by Tyrrell, and Fines. The Acting Sergeant seemed to have a touch of desperation when issuing fines and even sought to critique some of the members sartorial decisions.

Now the meeting was handed back to Secretary Mark to revisit the discussion on New Member initiatives. He began by going back over the points raised in the last meeting and then invited members to submit any new thoughts. This week the meeting was a bit more controlled than last week (yes, your Ed kept as quiet as possible) and resulted in some additions to Marks list, which is reproduced below.

A relatively subdued meeting finished around 8:00.

The Membership Discussion
Membership discussions & notes 18 & 25 January 2023
  • Put a small membership team together to create a structured plan that includes the forward direction of the club, and evidence of historical achievements. Impose strict timelines & an action plan for reporting back to members.
  • Introduction of no less than three major “local” club projects; including the Eagle walking track & the development of a Dromana Chamber of Commerce, which should include local business owners & managers, who are to be visited personally. Don’t be concerned with having too many from the same ‘classification.
  • Develop an up to date and user-friendly club social media tool that is constantly updated.
  • Include Zoom options for all club meeting for the members that cannot attend each meeting & circulate the Zoom meeting request to all persons on the club data base.
  • Initiate a marketing strategy to attract new members, including a small booklet with pictures (market, Halloween, carols, etc.) noting history, past, present & future plans. Sponsors should be mentioned on the back.
  • Seek external assistance and other suggestions where capabilities are not available within the club.
  • Survey the public about their attitudes to Rotary at all external Rotary events (markets, Halloween, BBQs, etc.)
  • Invite targeted business people & prospective members to a special meeting to discuss the ‘chamber’ proposal & have non-Rotary knowledgeable & interesting speakers to outline the proposal & the need (e.g. Paul Nitas, Graeme Pittock, the mayor, etc.).
  • Ask as many contacts, friends & relations to come to a Rotary meeting as possible, particularly women & members of ethnic & sporting groups.
  • Have a guest speaker regularly (at least twice a month); everyone needs to share the burden of looking out for & inviting potentially interesting speakers.
  • Endeavour to obtain media publicity for all club events & ensure that we advertise these events to the public via sandwich boards, posters, etc. Erect more signs like the 50th anniversary sign.
  • Implement a formal Friends of Rotary program.
  • Contact Probus family members, past Rotarians & external Paul Harris Fellowship winners.
  • Invite sponsors & local business people as guest speakers
  • Follow up, follow up & follow up.

NORMALLY, if you cannot attend the meeting, then please send your apologies to
Rick Hayllar only by email: rhayllar@bigpond.net.au, or phone on 0409 940 033, before the MIDDAY on the Tuesday preceding the meeting.
ADDITIONALLY, Rick will send out an email requesting information on who is attending, to aid in catering.
