President's Message
member photo
I am pleased to report that we have a table of eight going to the Interplast dinner on Tuesday the 8th.

We are still waiting for the final figures for the Halloween event but I can report that the CFA took $1905.45 in donations.

We have a working Bee at the Hillview Community reserve on the third Saturday of the month. This month it's the 19th at 9am
Main task is to clean up the bonfire area. Some work is needed on the Picnic shelter. The Habitat Restoration Fund is going to carry out weed spraying through the Reserve. This will deal with the Blackberries, Watsonia,Gorse and many others.

I hope that our 50yr banner will be ready soon, so we can install it on the side of the Salvation Army building in Pier St.
Happenings at last weeks’ meeting

This week Bob Donaldson took on the role of Chair. Due to certain key people all being absent Charles Ross took on the role of Acting (Acting) Sergeant and wielded the gavel to keep the meeting well in order.

Bob commenced the meeting by remarking on the success of the Halloween BBQ and Bonfire night and thanking Greg for all his effort in managing the revival of such a well supported community event. He then called on Secretary Mark for his report.

Mark reminded the meeting that we would be discussing changes to our by-laws later in the night. He then went on to announce:
  • A reminder that our AGM is on 30th November;
  • The Club requires a Street Trader license, as part of our operation of the Market, and this has been applied for;
  • An e-mail has been sent regarding the National Youth Science Forum, and will be forwarded on;
  • The Southern Peninsular Food For ALL brochure was handed around at the meeting; and
  • $1007 was raised on the marshmallow stall and the leftovers were donated to, and much appreciated by, the Southern Peninsular Community Centre.
Bob now called on Charles to issue fines and conduct the Lotto. Greg won the Lotto and Charles made a good fist of garnering some dollars for Sergeant Pete’s chest.

Now we had Directors reports with Director Lyn reminding her volunteers of the interview sessions at Balcombe College at 8:30 on 10th November.

Next was Chris to let us know that the leftover beef and coleslaw, from Halloween, was donated to the Community House and gratefully accepted. He also let the meeting know that, after some “real world” testing, he is happy to announce that the safety chains on the new trailer do actually work.

The administrative side of the Club now got a workout, with Secretary Mark reading through a summary of the proposed by-law changes and leading a general discussion so that any members present had a chance to raise issues or ask for clarifications. There appeared to be little concern, within the meeting, about Mark’s suggested changes. However, Mark was asked to attempt some simplifications where practical and agreed to provide this within the next week. He reminded the meeting that the voting on these changes would be at the AGM.

Bob thanked Mark for his work on these changes and for conducting of the discussion.

Harry gave an update on his son’s progress, with the specialists report looking good. He is attending the Peter MacCallam Institute and has 6 weeks still to go.

Greg now spoke about the Halloween event and the fact that it was touch and go, depending on the weather. This was an issue because there really was no way of cancelling the event because of the extent of the pre-publicity that it had received. He thanked all the volunteers with special thanks to Pete and Merv for all their considerable efforts. It was a great night for the community and this was shown by the numbers who turned up and the general feeling of good will throughout the afternoon and evening.

This led on to a discussion about how the Club, and Rotary in general, could be better promoted as the organisation which actually “creates” the event. It was felt that we could/should derive more benefit, either with publicity or financially, from an event which has become something of a major diary entry for a large part of the community. It was decided that this would form part of the preparatory discussions for next year.
Although this was not one of the “busy” meetings, with no Guest Speaker or TMG (I’ll get you later Tony. Ed), we had had a full meeting which closed at 8:05.

Polio Movie Event
Don’t forget that we have the opportunity to raise more funds for the fight against polio with this movie event.

The Hub Spinner
“I emptied the Spinner at the Hub today and banked the proceeds less the paper, straws, lollies and foreign coins.
It amounted to $458.95
I and was a rather a weighty lot!
I should empty it more frequently!
 As you would know the current collection is for the Rotary Flood relief (NSW and QLD).
 I have collected quite a lot of foreign currency coins from the spinners
Any suggestions of what we might do with them?

Regards
Rick”
