Vice President Rob once again presided over this week’s meeting. After proposing the Toast and calling for the Invocation, he called on Adrian as this week’s Chair.
Adrian read out this week’s apologies and welcomed our Guests Cherie Coburn, Christopher Sylvan and Darren Zmegac.
Mark gave a general Report (probably in lieu of the Presidents Report. Ed) regarding next week’s AGM. This is a legal requirement of the Club and, in addition, there will be a number of questions and requests presented to the Club for consideration:
- What is an appropriate Meeting night?;
- Should there be a trial of having only two Meetings per month?;
- The Board to review the meals and venue for Club meetings;
- Nominations are still open for next years President (24/25); and
- Nominations are required for Treasurer and Secretary for the next two years (24/25 and 25/26).
Next it was the Secretary’s report from Mark:
- The Dromana Community House have requested our Father Christmas for their Xmas BBQ;
- The Sea Scouts and Lions visits now “on the back-burner”;
- The District AGM will be attended by Rod via Zoom (since cancelled. Ed);
- President Mick will return next week;
- The Rosebud/Rye joint meeting will be on 6th December; and
- The Secretary will check on the possibility of a joint Meeting with the Mt Martha club sometime in the new year.
Joseph has been investigating options for reducing our cost of the rides for Halloween and is in discussions with the Boneo Amusements owner.
Bob gave the meeting a quick update on the planning activities around our Australia Day stall (Friday 26th 8:30 to 1:30). The Men’s Shed will, once again, be supplying the cutouts for painting.
Greg announced that the Tiny Houses Donation button has been added to our Web site and the Bulletin. The target is $75,000.
Harry will be attending the Disaster Aid Australia conference on Sunday (19th). He also drew our attention to a relatively new project called RAM (Rotary Against Malaria). He will be investigating further on how we can become involved but initially RAM are looking for nets, for protection.
Prompted by an old(ish) photo found by Geoff, Chris gave a short talk about the “controversies” surrounding the introduction of Women to Rotary Clubs around 92/93. (Doesn’t seem that long ago until you realise the different world we are in now. Ed)

At this point the Meeting had a wide-ranging discussion covering:
- Elain is not well and would appreciate some contact and a chat;
- Deployment of the Market signs was organised;
- Extra stalls are joining the Market;
- The Clubs Social Media is having some success;
- A Fruit and Veg Hamper will be the prize at a Market Raffle;
- The Two Bays Fun Run will be on the 14th January and we will be providing a BBQ as usual; and
- The 21st January is the date for our next Bunnings BBQ.
Joseph suggested that the Club look into having a Music Festival running from the 15th January up until Australia Day up at the Reserve.
The Bulletin is looking for input, on any subject, from the Members. (Not just getting me to re-type any old article. Ed) This would make the Bulletin more relatable to Members and their ideas.
Lyn spoke about our various contributions to local schools and suggested that we give the bulk of the budgeted amount ($3,000) to the Peninsular Specialist School to go towards the building of their Sensory Room. Enthusiastically supported by the Meeting. Her committee is working on options for the future.
Now it was time for Person Behind the Badge, and this week it was Bob’s turn.
Bob was a war baby, growing up in the WA Pilbara region on a pastoral property owned by the Hancock family. Hammersley station went from cattle to iron ore and became Hammersley Iron which morphed into Rio Tinto.
Bob and his sister grew up as the only non-indigenous children on the property, learning via the School of the Air for six years. He remembers his Mum peddling the generator to provide the electricity. The move to Perth was quite a culture change as he hadn’t seen so many white kids, at school, in his life.
He joined Elders as a Wool Classer, but the amount of travelling was not conducive to family life so he joined a company that provided food machinery. That led to working in Tasmania for a “café bar” company and, later, a move to Melbourne where he joined Stihl and looked after the Australian and Pacific Islands area for the next 20 years.
Next, he transferred across to Honda initially to do market research for their move into competition with Stihl. He spent 14 years with Honda and then, in 2010, retired to Cape Schank. He began volunteering in various community organisations and projects and has been happily doing that for the last 12 years. (Looking at all these dates the ever-youthful Bob must have started his career when he was a young boy. Ed.)
Adrian called for the Lotto to be drawn and it was won by Harry.
Adrian thanked the Members for “filling the night” as it was time to end. (Just a nice way of saying we could all talk under wet cement. Ed)
Rob pointed out that new recycling receptions are being opened at 32 Brasser Ave and the BP Service Station.
The Meeting closed at 8:00.

A Treasurer for the rest of 23/24 and nominee Treasurer for 24/25 and 25/26.
A Secretary Nominee for 24/25 and 25/26.
Without these roles being filled the Club cannot function.

As we’ve all seen on the TV and/or in the papers, the new bottle and can recycling depots are a great was of generating another income stream for clubs.
