Linda Humphries Partner's Project

Linda, DG Mark Humphries partner has selected "Rotarians against malaria (RAM)" as her partner project and hopes to raise funds for the "end malaria in Vanuatu – for good. I hope to convince the board, this Wednesday evening, to donate something towards this event and be able to announce it at the next meeting when Mark and Linda are present. As many of you would know RAM is a long standing Rotary Project worthy of support.

Polio day bike ride.

At the time of writing I have ridden 79.71 Km this month according to my bike computer, I actually did a further 10 Km but the computer's battery was flat so I will have to do it again I still have a week to do a further 20.29 km so hopefully I will not let my backers down. There is still time to support the event and kill Polio for ever.

Christmas Party

I normal times we have a Christmas dinner; this year who knows. I sent an email out to members re a possible alternative and hoping for some suggestions.

Possible Fund raising opportunity.

Carol and I have been subscribing to the since lock down.

This is a great way top get a "live" performance without leaving your home.

To subscribe to each event costs about $24.00

Helpfully, soon we will be able to invite a couple or two for dinner. Each couple would then pay say $50 for meal BYOG. Then sit back and watch and hear the concert in comfort without having to drive to the City. I have mentioned his before but I am reminded of this again after Carol and I enjoyed a Piano recital while dining on a lamb tagine (that I prepared the day before), with one of our Sponsor Winelovers' reds.

I recommend these concerts, anyway just look at what is on offer both classical and contemporary.

Click on here to see what's on offer.

This is always a great way to support the artists that otherwise cannot perform in public.

Next Year's Positions

As you can see below Harry is still seeking members to fill his chair and committee positions. Don't let him down let him know, (Before he calls you), what you are willing to do to help make Harry's year something special!!!

Club Archives

Last meeting I discussed the possibility of completing our electronic record of club History. This is a large project that will not be done in a short time.  We need a few volunteers to scan and produce PDF files that can be uploaded to our ClubRunner website. Then we are not dependent on the good will of members such as Merv Prossor to keep the filing cabinets full of (potentially) silverfish eaten documents.

Happenings at the last meeting

This week was a Club night as we did not have a guest speaker.

President Rick stated that his bike ride has raised $460 for polio.  He is now working towards his goal of 100 km for he month
Rick has inserted a button in the website to allow for members and visitors to the website to contribute to club projects.
Rick has banked over $1,000 from the spinners in Dromana Hub and McCrea.

A visitor Lynne Stockdale spoke briefly about herself. She started work in textiles with lots of overseas travel.  She has worked in vocational education in the later years.

Secretary Bob indicated that he  received a newsletter from Gippsland Rotary about their Centenary  house.  Polio day is this Saturday.  He has received an email from Ray Robinson, of the Australia Day Committee, who felt that there was a lack of time to organise this big event, involving a large number of store holders.  This event, as well as the Carols by Candlelight evening, have not yet been cancelled, but they may be in a different form.  He reminded us that the District Governor will attend our next meeting.

Adrian felt that we can have a “lift the lid” campaign later in the year.  It is usually planned for October.

President Rick has archived a number of club document and he is seeking for somebody to achieve additional club material.  Information in a paper from can be scanned and placed on the website.  As an example, he invited members to have a look at the documentation for the clubs 40th year celebration, which is on the website

Tony was contacted by the council about the market.  They said that there would be no market until after Christmas. The  26 January Day is the proposed first market day.

Harry spoke about the Conversion of the containers for homeless people.  The council raised a couple of issues.  The Salvos to organise the tenants.  Maintenance to be paid by the tenants funding.  The project is very good one but will take a while to get going and is likely to take about a couple of years.

Carol's Story

Firstly I would like to send my heartfelt sympathy to Bernadette and Terry O'Day on the death of their daughter. What a sad situation to outlive a child. It would be nice to learn more about her shortened life.

This year we are learning our opportunity to travel will be significantly curtailed.

Rick and I have enjoyed the hospitality and friendship of ISFR. Skiing each year in beautiful villages, not often visited by Australians. Last year we were hosted by Obersdorf in Germany but close enough to the Austrian border to ski there as well. They welcome the Australians, but they no longer say “how are your kangaroos”. We always arrive late in the ski season, often the village is quite hot with not much snow evident, so as we go up the mountains travelling in high tech lifts, transporting 60 or so people, underground trains, and cable cars, we gasp in amazement when we arrive to immaculately groomed snow like marshmallow. Everyone skis like experts as we hesitatingly take our first steps for at least six months. Wonderful events are staged each night, local food is always a feature, often not quite to our tastes. We will treasure these memories as travel becomes questionable for all of us. Good bye cruise ships, cheap air fares and the most serious an inability to visit family and friends in northern spheres. We will be holidaying nearer to home, seeing more of our own vast country. Viva Australia.
