A NOTE FROM Mark Moloney, President rotary international.
Fellow Rotarians,

From the stage in Hamburg during Rotary’s International Convention in June, I told an audience of more than 26,000 women and men that our organization will thrive for another 114 years because we are not afraid of change. We are committed to growing Rotary through outreach to new prospective members, engagement of our current members, and the creation of alternatives for membership. Critical to that growth is becoming more diverse and providing more opportunities for leadership for all Rotarians.

In support of this goal, the Rotary board of directors made a commitment to increase the number of women in Rotary and in leadership positions to 30 percent by 2023. Currently, women make up 23 percent of our membership, and represent, on an average, 20 percent of leadership positions.

In some areas of the world, women already make up more than 30 percent of Rotary’s members and leaders. However, in some areas, that percentage is much less. But we all have a responsibility—men and women in every club and every district in the Rotary world— to help our organization diversify and grow so that we can remain relevant for future generations.

I invite you to an upcoming webinar organized by Rotary International to discuss the topic of advancing women in Rotary. Information about the webinar is included below. You can register to join live and receive a recording to watch when it’s most convenient.

On that stage in Hamburg, when I announced our commitment to elevating women in Rotary, the crowd cheered. Rotary is ready for change—let us work together to make sure it happens, that we grow Rotary, and we ensure that Rotary Connects the World for generations to come.

Kindest regards,
Mark Daniel Maloney
President, Rotary International 2019-2020

Membership
A concern across not only our District but Rotary across the world is the decline in Membership. We know people want to volunteer, we are a group of volunteers, but why do people not want to join Rotary?

Could one reason be, people still think of Rotary as Old Grey Retired Old Men? Our District has the dubious honour of the largest fall in numbers last year! Do you know what happens to Districts when they fall below a certain number? They are told, yes told, they are to merge with another District! We are fast approaching that number!! What happens then…. We don’t get a say in what happens, it just happens. Do you want to lose your club identity? Do you want to lose your District identity?

We cannot wait any longer, every club, every Rotarian MUST engage with others and tell them about the great work that Rotary does, not just in our local community, but the greater community. We must make our clubs attractive and flexible to meets the needs of our community. Yes that means CHANGE and change is difficult. Below is a short list of some possible reasons people don’t join or join then leave.

Not engaged - The sizzle is not what they were sold – Employment - Too much same old same old - Not engaged or challenged - Financial burden – Time - Internal politics/clicks - Wrong induction - Not mentored - Not talking about Rotary – Boring – Ego - No fun -  Nothing happening – Personalities -  Too much ceremony - Old idea - Not being listened to - Clash of ideas

A simple way to start looking at who we might ask, look at classifications, who is not represented? Draw up a plan and approach.

                                        GUEST SPEAKER THIS WEEK.
Chris Brayne
ALP member for Nepean.
Chris spoke about how he had lived on the Peninsula all his life, he was an exchange student for 3 months and is passionate about the Peninsula with their transport issues, getting the overpass over Jetty Road in Rosebud, saying it is to built up with local traffic as well a school near by, Chris said when he first put in his application to run for a seat he was rejected and told there was only seats available for those areas were they couldn’t loose, in August he re-applied and was granted a chance to run, and to his shock he actually won, he said he went to the election with no promises.
One issue brought up my one of our members Roger was the new sub-division rules that will affect the Mornington Peninsula, Chris has an opinion that it would be a good idea but only in some areas as well as the 3 story ruling for development, he said the Mornington Shire has a habit of rejecting planes only for the people to take it to V-CAT and getting it passed, as the planning minister hasn’t passed anything as yet.
There was also mention of the Pioneer Quarry, and there different opinions on this as there is a lot of development going on and there is a need for stone, and if the Quarry was not there it would all need to be transported from elsewhere, a very costly exercise, still open for discussion.
It was a very good talk, l personally found Chris to be very knowlegable  in everything that was brought up, and as Chris is fairly new to Politics and young, so enjoyed the talk very much, it could of gone on much longer if time was available with members wanting to ask more questions, maybe we will get him back again in a few months.
