Happenings at last weeks’ meeting
This week’s meeting was another club night which generated a lot of talking points. (hence the liberal use of dot lists. Ed.) Acting Sergeant Merv called the meeting to order and passed it over to Greg for the toast and apologies. Greg also mentioned that the Rotary International Convention has received some good comments on the radio. The Board had their last meeting for the year with the next one being combined meeting for this year’s and next year’s Boards.
Merv very quickly popped up to say that the Red Shield Appeal went well and to thank John, Charles and Ann for their efforts.
This week’s Chair was Geoff who called for the Directors Reports.
Harry drew the meetings attention to an e-mail from RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) announcing two upcoming projects, one in the Solomon Islands and one in Tonga. Volunteers are required for both these commendable Rotary efforts. Harry also announced that he would be stepping back from his front-line Rotary work, after 22 years, to spend time with his son and family.
Rob gave his opinion that our Club should have some affiliation with the Habitat Restoration Fund and think about possibly embarking on some joint fund-raising.
Next came the Secretary’s Report from Mark:
- Some Annual Report are still due. If they may not be ready for the 21st June Handover, please let him know;
- Harry has found the Sandy Christy Award, so that mystery is solved;
- Please wear the new vests to the Market;
- The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) nominations are due by the 31st July. Is there anyone we can nominate for the “one in a lifetime” experience? Please let Mark know;
- The latest Board meeting minutes will be posted on ClubRunner; and
- There may still be some complaints about the By-Laws changes but it was agreed to proceed with the Legal Review.
The Treasurer Report was brief with a request that the Budget for next year is set up as soon as possible instead of it being dragged out like this year’s.
Further reports began:
Charles requested volunteers to help set up the Fruit and Veg’ stall at the Market. Hands went up.
Chris thanked Charles and Mark for taking over the Market organisation while he has been unavailable. There are only 20 stalls for this month’s Market so the Club needs to evaluate whether we should shut the Market during the winter months. Finally, a big thanks to all those who have been concerned about Margret’s status.
Mark spoke on the notice of an upcoming meeting, in June, on the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN). This is a program which must go ahead and will be under the new 9810 District.
Geoff now called for the Lotto Draw, which was won by Adrian, and followed by the Fines Session using the old “no badges” fine, Murray not being able to find Joseph’s shop because it was closed, Rob for wearing his Four and Twenty beanie, and John dobbed in Mark for breaking Joy’s toe. (all the fun of the fair. Ed.).
John now volunteered to deliver the TMG, having been inspired by Bob’s earlier talk on his early days learning via School of the Air:
- John attended the local state school;
- There were only 8 students and he was the only one in his class;
- His sister was the only girl at the school;
- He remembers the teachers having a prejudice against down syndrome children, for some reason;
- The worst teache r he had was the one in 6th grade. All he did was work on his motorbike and go absent for his lunch. The boys took this opportunity to go rabbiting;
- After receiving no teaching in grades 5 and 6 it took him about 3 years to catch up when he went to school in Boort;
- Both his Father and Mother taught at the school which had over 30 kids; and
- His time spent rabbiting was productive because they sold the skins and sometimes caught a fox.
(I haven’t done Johns TMG justice because my notes were so cryptic that even I couldn’t figure out what I’d written. Sorry John. Ed.)
Harry wanted the members to know that his son has received the “all clear” and he would like to thank the Club for it’s considerations.
Geoff noted that when we have no Speakers then it means the members find a lot to talk about.
Greg reminded thanked all attendees and closed the meeting at 8:00.
